War Services of the General Officers.
117 Major General Lowth when Brigadier commanding at Kurrachee disarmed the 21st
Hegt. Bombay N.I. on the night of the 13th Sept. 1857. Served with the Central India field
force in 1858 in command of the 84th Regt. and was present at the siege storm and capture of
the strong hill fort of Chundairee, battle of the Betwa, siege storm and capture of the town
and fortress of Jhansi, action of Koonch, operations before Calpee from 16th to 21st May,
battle of Gowlowlie, capture of the town and fort of Calpee, battle of Morar, battle of and
capture of the town and fortress of Gwalior (several times mentioned in despatches, Brevet of
Colonel, distinguished service pension, CB., Medal and Clasp).
118 Major General the Hon. A. A. Spencer served throughout the Eastern campaign of
1854-55, and commanded the 44th Regt. at the battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol,
and attack and occupation of the Cemetery and Suburbs on the 18th June—wounded. Served as
Brigadier General, and commanded the 1st Brigade, 4th Division, in support in the right attack
in the assault of the Redan, and fall of Sebastopol on 8th Sept., and subsequently commanded
the British land forces in the expedition to Kinbourn, resulting in the capture of those forts
and the garrison of 1400 men (Medal and Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sar¬
dinian and Turkish Medals, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie).
119 Major General Blachford served with the 24th in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-9
(Medal), including the passage of the Chenab and battles of Sadoolapore, ChilJianwallah (suc¬
ceeded to the command of the Regt.), and Goojerat (Medal and Clasps).
120 Major General Bloomfield served with the 59th Regt. the campaign of 1815, including
the battle of Waterloo, storming of Cambray, and capture of Paris.
121 Major General Lawrenson commanded the 17th Lancers in the Eastern campaign of
1854-55, including the cavalry affair of Bulganac and battle of Alma. Appointed in July
1855 with the rank of Brigadier-General to the Heavy Brigade, consisting of the 1st 4th and
5th Dragoon Guards, 1st 2nd and 6th Dragoons, which he commanded at the battle of Tcher-
naya. Succeeded Sir James Scarlett, in December following, in command of the British cavalry
in the East, which command he held until the return of the army in 1856. (Medal and Clasp,
Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 4th Class of the Medjidie).
122 Major General Hodgson served with the 45th in the Burmese war (Medal).
124 Major General 1\I‘Cleverly served the campaign against the Rajah of Coorg, in April
1834, with the 48th Regiment.
125 Major General Robert B. Wood served as Aide de Camp and Military Secretary to
Lord Hardinge throughout the campaign on the Sutlej (Medal), including the battles of Mood-
kee, Ferozeshah (severely wounded), and Sobraon (Medal and two Clasps, and CB.).
126 Major General Lewis served with the Grenadier Guards at the siege and fall of Sebasto¬
pol from 13th Aug. 1855 (Medal and Clasp, Turkish Medal, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
127 Major General Bedford served with the 60th Rifles in the Kaffir war of 1851-53 (Medal
and Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
129 Major General Parlby commanded the detachment 4th Lt. Drs. during the Rebecca riots
in Wales in 1843, and received the approval of the Civil and Military authorities. He brought
the 10th Hussars from India ’through Egypt to the Crimea in 1855, and commanded the Cavalry
Division from 17th April to 30th June, and the Hussar Brigade from 1st July till Sept. 1855,
and was present at the reconnaissance under Omar Pasha on 19th April, as also at the battle of
the Tchernaya (Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 4th
Class of the Medjidie).
131 Major General Longfield commanded the 2nd Brigade at the siege of Delhi in 1857,
the Reserve during the assault, and served in the City during the six days’ fighting that en¬
sued {CB., Medal and Clasp).
132 Major General Balders served the campaign on the Sutlej in 1845-6, and commanded the
3rd Light Dragoons in the battles of Moodkee and Ferozeshah (Medal and one Clasp, Brevet of
Lieut.Colonel and CB.). He was wounded in the groin whilst charging the enemy’s batteries
at Ferozeshah, on the evening of the 21st Dec. 1845.
133 Major General Hamilton served with the Grenadier Guards the Eastern campaign of
1854, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (severely wounded), and siege of
Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, Officer of the Legion of Honor, 3rd Class of the Medjidie,
and Turkish Medal).
134 Major General Horn served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55; commanded the Right
Brigade 4th Division at the battle of Alma; and the 20th Regt. at the battles of Balaklava
(and recapture of the redoubts and guns from the Russians, who had driven the Turkish force
therefrom the same morning) and Inkerman (twice wounded and horse shot under him): pre¬
sent throughout the siege operations against Sebastopol, and in the trenches at the two assaults
and fall of the town (Medal and Clasps): at Inkerman he succeeded to the command of the
4th Division (Medal and Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish
Medals, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie).
135 Major General J. F. G. Campbell commanded the infantry force which formed part of
the expedition against the Insurgent Boers, beyond the Orange River, South Africa, in April
1845; and he commanded the Reserve Battalion, 91st Regt., throughout the whole of the Kaffir
war of 1846-7, and was specially mentioned in Colonel Somerset’s Dispatches of the 17th and
18th Apr. 1846, as also in Lieut.Gen. Sir George Berkeley’s General Order of the 17th Dec.
1847, as having conducted and commanded one of the columns of attack against the chief
Sandilli, which concluded the war (Medal).
