27 War Services of the General Officers.
100 Major General Cameron served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55; commanded the
42nd Eegiment at the battle of Alma, and the Highland Brigade at the battle of Balaklava
on the expedition to Kertcli, siege and fall of Sebaslopol, and assault on the outworks 18th
June (Medal and Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals,
3rd Class of the Me<1jidie).
101 Major General Bell served in the Peninsula from July 1811 to the end of that war in
1814. and ivas engaged in the action of Arroyo do Mnlino, last siege of Badajuz, capture
of Fort Napoleon and Bridge at Almaraz, retreat from Burgos end Madrid, battles of Vittoria,
the Pyrenees, Pass of Maya and Koncesvalcs, actions of 30th and 31st July 1813 agninst
D"Erlong's Corps in the mountains near Parnploun, battles of the Nivelle, the Nive, Bayonne,
St. Pier (contusion of the head), Orthfs, Tarbes, and Toulouse (slightly wounded), with many
other affairs and tkirmishos. Afterjiards served in the East Indies, in the Burmese war, and in
the West Indies. Was actively employed during the rebellion in Canada in 1837-38, particu¬
larly in the capture of St. Charles and St. Eustaohe ; he commanded the Fort and garrison
of Coteau-du-Lac, an important position on the river St. Lawrence, and received the
thanks of the Commander of the Forces and the brevet of Major for his exertions in re¬
covering the guns of the fort and shots from the bottom of the river, and mounting them in
position when it was reported impracticable ; the guns were 24-pounders, sixteen of which
and 4.000 round shot he recovered in the depth of a Canadian winter. He has received the
War Medal with seven Clasps for Badajoz, Vittoria, the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, aud
Toulouse ; and the Indian Medal for Ava. Served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, and com¬
manded the Rojal Hegt. in the battles of Alma and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol, where
he was wounded, and subsequently commanded a Brigade (Mentioned in despatches, Medal
and three Clasps, CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor, Turkish IMedal, and 4th Class of the
Mcdjidie).
102 Major General "Vigors served throughout the campaigns of 1838 and 39 in Affghanistan.
Commanded the two Flank Companies of the 13th Light Infantry, which formed a part of
the force under Sir Robert Sale sent in pursuit of the ruler of Candahar, brother of the king
of Cabool ; crossed the rapid Helmond with eighteen men (the advance) on a small raft, landed
close to the Fort of Giriakh, which was found just vacated by the enemy. He commanded the
left Flank Company of the 13th, with the forlorn hope, under Col. Dennic, at the storm and
capture of the fort of Ghuzi:ee (Medal), and was also present at the capture of Cabool, and
in other minor affairs.
103 Major General Grierson served at Cadiz during parts of 1812 and 1813, and afterwards
on the eastern coast of Spain.
104 Major General Kichardson-Robcrtson served in South Africa, in command of the suc¬
cessful expedition against the insurgent Emigrant Boers, beyond the Orange River, in 1845.
Also as Brigadier, and in command of the 7th Dragoon Guards in the Kaffir campaign of
1846-7 (Medal and CB.)
105 Major General Brajbrooke served at the capture of the Kandian territories in 1815,
and in the Kandian rebellion in 1817-18.
106 Major General Robert Law served with the 71st Eegt. on the retreat to and battle of
Corunna. On the expedition to Walcheren. attack on Tcr Ver, siege and surrender of Flush¬
ing. Subsequently in Portugal, Spain, aud South of France from 1810 to 1814,—in action with
it at Sjbral, Massena's retreat, battle of Fuentes D'Onor, on 3rd and 5ih May, 1811 (wounded
in two places), covering first and second sieges of Badajoz, surprise and defeat of Girard's
column at Arroya de Molino, and at the storming and destruction of the enemy's forts and
fete de pont at Almaraz, defence of Alba de Tormes, battles in the Pyrenees and attack on
Sauraren, capture of an enemy's convoy for the relief of Pampeluna in July 1813, battle of the
Nivr, action at C;imbo. affairs at Hellette, Arrivarette, and Garris, action at Aire, employed in
an armed boat at Urt on the river Adour, battle near Bayonne 13th Dee. 1813, battle ot St. Pierre
near Bayonne, battle of Orthes, and action at Tarbes (wounded). In the foregoing services he
was Adjutant to his Regt. and for a time acted as such to the Light Battalion 1st Brigade,
2nd Division of the Peninsular Army. Served also the campaign of 1815, including the battle
of Waterloo where while acting as Adjutant he was severely wounded by a cannon shot which
also killed his horse. He has received the War Medal with six Clasps, and is a KH.
107 Major General L'Estrange served the campaign of 1808-9 in Spain with the 14tb, and
was present at the battle of Corunna. Capture of the Isle of Frarxe in 1810. Capture of
Java in 1811, and engaged with a Dutch brigade at St. Nicholas. At the storming of a strong
Dutch Fort on the coast of Bantam. On board II.M.S. lioscins at the boarding and capture
of eleven French gun-boats. Present at the siege and storm of Cornells, and storm and
capture of the heights of Serandole. At the capture of the town and fortress of Sambas, Isle
of Borneo, in March 1813. Nepaul war in 1816 ; siege and capture of Ilattras in March 1817 ;
Mahratta campaign in 1817 and 18 : siege and storm of Bhurtpore under Lord Combermtre.
He has received the War Medal and two Clasps for Corunna and Java.
108 Major GeneralWilliamson served with the 27th Regt. in the Kaffir war of 1834-35(Medal).
109 Sir Charles Van Straubenzee served throughout the campaign against the Rajah of Coorg
in 1834 resulting in the annexation of that territory-. As Major he succeed*d to the command
of the 39th Regt. during the action of Maharajpore, Gwalior (Medal and Brevet of Lt.
Colonel) on 29th Dec. 1S43. Commanded the British Contingent in Greece from Nov. 1854 to
April 1855, when he proceeded in command of the Buf s to the Crimea and continued there in
command of a Brigade until July 1856; was present at the two assaults of the Redan in June
and September, at the former he commanded a separate Brigade, and at the latter of the let
