91 Major General Harvey served on the British Staff in the Syrian Campaign of 1840-41
as a Local Major and Assistant Adjutant General, and in conjunction with Mr. Wood, British
Political Agent, collected the Cavalry Levies of the Emir Bechir, and was present with them
and the Turkish Forces at the affair with the garrison of Gaza near Ascalon (Brevet of Lt.
Colonel, Syrian Meiial, and Gold Medal from the Sultan). Having rejoined his llegt., the
14th Lt. Drigoous, then in India, in 1842, was present with a portion of it in 1844 at the bom¬
bardment and capture of the Mahratta fortresses of Panulla and I'owunghur, and in command
of the 3rd Brigade of the Field Force, when on the assault of Panulia by the 1st and 2nd
Brigades, the fortress of Pawunghur was taken by the 3rd Brigade (received in General
Orders the thanks of the Bombay Government).
92 Major General Dames served in the 66th llegt. in Canada during the rebellion of 1837-38.
Served in tiie 37th in Ceylon, and was sent on to India with 500 men of tlie Regt. in June 1837,
on the outbreak of the mutiny. At Ghuzeepore disarmed a regiment of Nauve Infantry, the
Dinapore mutineers threatening that station. Was besieged at Azimghur by Koer Sing's force,
and had his horse shot under him while making a sortie for the purpose of taking a gun that
was constantly firing on our entrenchments (Medalj.
93 Major General Warren served under the Duke of Wellington in 1815. Commanded the
55th Rpgt. in an expedition ajainst the Rajah of Coorg in April 1834 (Colonel Mill being in
command of the column until a few days before he was killed): led a successful assault on and
captured the stockade of Kissenhally; and was severely wounded in an attack on the stockade
of Soamwarpettah. Screed in China from 1841 to 1844 (Medal): commanded the ;J5th in the
expedition up the Yang-tse-kiang, and was severely wounded at the storming and capture of
Chinkiangfoo, where he was personally engaged with three Tartars, whom he killed. Served
the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, commandtd the Regt. at the battle of Alma (received two
contused wounds), siege of Sebastopol, and repulse of the sortie on the 26th October; com¬
manded the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, at the battle of Inkerman, and was severely and alio
slightly wounded; again slightly wounded at the attack en the Redan on the 8th Sept. (Medal
and Clasps, Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 3rd Class of
the Medjidie).
94 Major General Malcolm served on the China expedition (Medal).
95 Major General R. H. Wynyard served with the force in New Zealand from Oct. 1845
unlilJan. 1847, in command of the 58th Regt.; commanded the advance Division up the Kowa
Kowa River, and on through the interior from the landing up to the position before Ruape-
kapeka, and entered the breach with the stormers in the assault on Kawiti's Pah on 11 Jan.
1846. Ajjpointed to the command of the Forces in New Zealand in Jan. 1851, held Her
Majesty's Commission as Lieut.Governor of New Ulster from 1851 to 1853, and administered
the government of the whole Colony from Dec. 1853 to Sept. 1855. Selected fur the Cape
command in Feb. 1859, and commissioned as Lieut. Governor of the colony the following month ;
assumed the duties of Governor in Chief and High Commissioner from Aug. 1859 to July 1860,
and again from Aug. 1861 to Jan. 1862.
96 Major General Sandilands served with the expedition to Walcheren; also the campaign
of 1815, and was engaged on the 17lh June with the Horse Artillery in covering the retiring
movement from Quatre Bras, and on the 18th of June he was present at the battle of Waterloo.
97 Lord William Paulet served the Eastern campaign of 1854, as Assistant Adjutant General
to the Cavalry Division, including the battles of the Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege
of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, Commander 1st Class
St. Maurice and St. Lazarus, 3rd Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
98 Major General M'Pherson embarked for the Peninsula in May 1809 as a volunteer in
the 52nd Light Infantry, and served as such in the advance up to Talavera and the retreat
thence to Campo Mayor. On 2nd Nov. 1809, was promoted to an Ensigncy in the 43rd, from
which time he served with the Light Division untd the end of that war in 1814, including
the following battles, sieges, &c., viz. Coa, Mortiagoa, skirmish near and battle of Busaco,
Coimbra, Alenquer, Pombal, Rsdinha, Casal Nova, FdZ d'Arouce, Sabugal, Marcalva, Futntes
d Ouor (3rd and 5th May), Espejo, Soita, siege and storm of Ciudad Rodrigo, siege and
storm of Badajoz (March and April 1812), Carvellejo, Castrajon, Petiegua, Salamanca,
capture of Madrid aud the Retiro, San Munos, affairs in the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Bayonne, Nive,
Tarbes, Tournefeuille, aiid Toulouse. Contused on the head in the trenches at Badajoz by the
bursting of a shell. Served as Aide de Camp and Military Secretary to Sir Charles Napier in
the operations in Scinde, including the destruction of the fort of Imaumghur, and battles of
Meeanee and Hyderabad (Medal and CiJ. and twice mentioned in despatches). Has received
the War Medil with eight Clasps for Busaco, Fuentes d'Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Sala¬
manca, Nivclle, Nive, and Toulouse. He also served in the Crimea, in command of the 1st
Brigade 4th Division, on the heights and siege before Sebastopol, from 18th December 1854
to 15th June 1855, when he was obliged to leave from ill health, brought on by over-fatigue
in the trenchts ; was General of the day in the trenches in command of the left attack on the
occasion of several sorties by the enemy, and on one particular occasion on the night of 11th
May 1855, when the enemy were repulsed with considerable loss, was thanked persimally by
Lord Raglan (Mtdal and Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 4th C!ass of the Medjidie, and
Turkish Medal).
99 Major General Ridley commanded the Grenadier Guards and afterwards a Brigade in
the 1st Division at the siege and fall of S<ba>topol from 1st Dec. 1854 (Medal and Clasp,
Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, aud 3rd Class of the Med¬
jidie).
