25 War Services of the General Officers.
Ionian Islands from 1812 to 1817, including the capture of Paxo in 1813, and occupation of
Corfu on the evacuation by the French in 1814. Was with a detachment at Zante on 21st Oct.
1821, defending a Turkish man-ofwar in an attack made by the Greeks, and was specially
selected and actively employed in the disarmamtnt of the inhabitants which followed. Served
in the West Indies during the emancipation of the slaves in 1834. Served in North America
during the boundary question in 1839-40.
77 Major Gmeral M. C. Johnstone served with the 27th Kegt. in the Kaffir wars of 1834 35
and 184G-47 (Medal).
78 M ijor General Meade served with the 88th in the Peninsula in the campaigns of 1811,
12, 13, and 14, including the battle of Fuentes d'Onor, siege of Badajoz in 1811, battle of
Salamanca (wounded), siege and storming of Badajoz, passage of the Nivelle and the Nive,
battles of Orthes and Toulouse. In 1814 he accompanied his Ilegiment to America, and the
following year joined the Army of Occupation in France. In 1821 he embarked for India on the
S'aff of Sir Thomas Reynell, and was at the siege and storming of Bhurtpore, for the capture of
which fortress ho received the rank of Major. He has received the War Medal with six Clasps.
79 Major General Forster served with the Scots Fusilier Guards before Bayonne in 1814.
Joined the Brij^ade of Guards in Paris in 1815.
80 Major General Macdowall served the campaign of 1814 in Holland with the 52n(),
including the actions at Merxem and bombardment of Antwerp.
81 Major General Bowers was slightly wounded at Waterloo.
82 Mujor General Arnaud served in the Peninsula with the 11th, and was present at the
battles of Busaco and Toulouse, for which he has received the War Medal with two Clasps.
83 Major General T. M. Williams previously to entering the Army served five years as Mid¬
shipman in the Navy, and was engaged in the attack of the French Fleet by Admiral Cornwallis on
the21stAug. 1805. Assisted in the disembarkation of the British Army in Portugal in Aug. 1808,
and at its embarkation during and after the battle of Corunna in 1809. Accompanied the
expedition to Walcheren the same year, and served in the squadrr n of gun-buats in the Scle'dt
covering the disembarkation of the army, and at the bombardment and capture of the fortresses
of Ter Verp, Ramakins, and Flushing. Landed with a division of sailors on the Island of
South Beveland, and was present at the taking of Fort Batz, and at the subsequent defence and
repulse of the enemy in their repeated efforts to repossess themselves of tliat important post;
also in frequent gun-boat actions co-operating with the army during their evacuation of those
islands in 1810. He quitted the Navy and entered the Army in Feb, 1811, and joined the 4th
Ilegt. in Portugal in August of the same year, and served in that corps and the 77th, into which
he was promoted from that period, to the termination of that war in 1814, without being a day
absent from his Ilegt. He was present at the siege and storming of Badajoz, at the operations
on the IJidassoa and Adour, and affairs at St. Jean de Luz, and at the Mayor's House in front
of Bidart in Dec. 1813, and at the investment of Bayonne and repulse of the sortie. He has
received the War Medal with one Clasp for Badajoz.
84 Major General Nepean served in the Peninsula with the 16th Light Dragoons and was
present at the battle of the Nive on the 9th Dec. 1813, for which action he has received the War
Medal with one Clasp. He served also the Waterloo campaign.
85 Major General Trevor served with the 33rd in Germany and Holland in 1813 and 14,
including both attatiks on Merxem, operations in front of Antwerp, and the storming of
Bergen-i'p-Zoom. Served also the campaign of 1815, including the action at Quatre Bras,
retreat on the following day, battle of Waterloo, advance to and capture of Paris. Also in
Jamaica with the 33rd, and in China with the 59th.
86 Lord Albemarle served the Waterloo campaign with the 14th Foot.
87 Major General Barlow served as a General in the trenches during the siege of Sebas-
topol, and commanded a Brigade at its fall (Medal and Clasp, Sardinian and Turkish
Medals, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie).
88 Major General Trydell served at the capture of the Capo of Good Hope in 1806, and was
present at the battle of Blueberg. Ho served also in the Kandian Insurrection of 1817 and 18,
in Ceylon.
89 Major General John Clark served the campaign of 1815, including the battle of Waterloo
and storming of Cambray. Served also the campaigns of 1824 and 25 in Ava,including the taking
of Rangocm, Kimmdiue, Kaoiaroot, and Mahattee. Led the attack upon the fortified heights
at Aiacan, and was severely wounded in the neck, arm, and left side.
90 Major General FJers Napier vias present with the Nizam's Subsidiary Force at the in¬
vestment of Hyderabad in 1830. Served on the British Staff in the Syrian campaign of
1840-41, with the local rank of Lt.Colonel and Assistant Adjutant General; held a respon¬
sible and independent command of an Irregular Force in the IS'aplouse mountains ; afterwiirds
employed as Commissioner with a portion of the Turkish army (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Syrian
Medal and Gold Medal from the Sultan). Was subsequently employed on Diplomatic Missions
by Lord Aberdeen and Lord Palmerston,—first, to bring back from the interior of Africa the
chiefs of Mount Lebanon, who had been seized by Ibrahim Pasha and sent by Mehemet Ali to
work in the mines of Sennaar ; and, secondly, to convey back to Beyrout several thousand
Syrian soldiers, who, contrary to the terms of the convenlioa, had been retained in Egypt
—was successful in the accomplishment of both theae Missions. Was employed on the staff,
with rank of Assist. Adjutant General, in the Kaffir war of 1846-47 (Medal), during which
was in charge of Native Levies and Irregulnr troops attached to the 1st division, and organized
a body of Irregular Horse, the nucleiu of what subsequently became tbe Kaffir Mounted Police.
