' Sir Alexander Macdonell served with the Eifle Brigade in the Kaffir war of 1846-47 (Medal). Also throughout
the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Aide de Camp to Sir George Brown, and present at the affair of Biilganac, capture
of Balaklava, and battles of Alma and Inkerman; commanded the 2nd Battalion from May 1855 to the fall of Sebas¬
topol, including the defence of the Quarries on 7th June, and assaults of the Redan on the i8th June and 8th Sept.
(Medal with three Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, CJB., Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and
Turkish Medals, and stli Class of the Medjidie). Commanded the 3rd Battalion during the Indian mutiny, includ¬
ing the skirmish at Secundra, siege and capture of Lucknow, and subsequent operations (Brevet of Colonel, Medal
with Clasp).
'" Lt.Colonel Hugh Shaw served with the i8th Royal Irish in the Crimea subsequent to the fall of Sebastopol
from December 1855 until the end of the Russian war in 1836. Served also in the New Zealand war in 1864-66,
and was present in the engagements at Nukumaru (mentioned in despatches, Victoria Cross, and Medal); was
awarded the YIE " for his gallant conduct at the skirmish near Nnkumaru, in New Zealand, on the 24th, January,
1863, in proceeding under a heavy fire with four Privates of the Regiment, who volunteered to accompany him,
to within thirty j'ards of the bush occupied by the rebels, in order to carry off a comrade who was badly wounded.
On the afternoon of that day. Captain Shaw was ordered to occupy a position about half a mile from tlie camp.
He advanced in skirmishing order, and when about thirty yards from the bush he deemed it prudent to retire
to a iialisade about sixty yards from the bush, as two of his party had been wounded. Finding that one of them
was imablo to move, he called for volunteers to advance to the front to carry the man to the rear, and the four
Privates referred to accompanied him, under a heavy fire, to the place where the wounded man was l.ving, and
the.y succeeded in bringing him to the rear." Served with the i8th Royal Irish in the Afghan war in 1880 with the
Kh'yber Line Field Force (Medal).
'* Lt.Colonel Wray served with the i8th Royal Irish in the New Zealand war of 1863-66, and was present at tho
affair at Kerikeri on 21st July 1863, and as Adjutant at the capture of the Putahi Pah on 7th Jan 7866 (Medal).
'' Major Jackson served with the iBth Royal Irish throughout the New Zealand war of 1863 66, and was ijresent
at the affair of the 26th Nov. 1863 in the Wairoa Bush, siege and capture of Orakau, and actions at Nukumaru on
24th and 25th Jan. 1865 (Medal). Also served with the iSth Royal Irish in the Afghan war in 1880 with the Khyber
Field Force (Medal).
-1 Major Lawrence served in tho Transport Department throughout the Zulu war of 1870, and was present in
the action of Gingiudhlovu (Medal with Clasp). Served with the i8th Royal Irish in the Afghan war in 1880 (Medal).

Khedive's Star).

Cieneral of the Queen's Troops (Colonel, CJI., Medal with Clasp).
