510 Madras Staff Corps.—War Services.
'~^ Colonel H. C. Bowker served at Anrnngabad inMay 1857; served as 2nd in Command ist Cavalry Hyder¬
abad Contingent during the campaign in Central India in 1857 -58, and was present at the battles of Mundisori? and
Godariah 21st 22nd 23rd and 24th November 1857, forcing the pass of Dhamoone by the Contingent troops under
Colonel Orr at Barowlee, general action at the pass of Mudenpore, Talbhet, Chundeyre'e, the investment andcapture of
Jhansi from 21st March to 5th April, pursuit of the Ranee of Jhansi (severely wounded, sabre-cut on right shoulder),
at Kotah (charger wounded), the general action of Koonch, taking of Calpce, and the various aflairs'before Calpee
during the previous eight days, the action of Bilowah, affairs of outposts with the enemy's cavalry and artillery
before ^walior. Commanded the regiment in all actions subsequent to Jhansi, and until the end of the campaign,
the fall of Gwalior, served in the Cavalry Brigade under Major Abbott that assisted in reiJcUing the threatened
invasion of the Deccan by Tantia Topee in November and December 1858 and January 1859 (Brevet of Major, Medal
with Clasp for Central India).
'"3 Colonel T. T. Turton served with the field force under Major Orr against insurgent Rohillas in the Nizam's
territories in 1855 ; was present at the attack and capture of a body of Rohillas near Lingi Bonti, by Lt.Colonel
Doria's Field Force.
181 Colonel T. Dyer served with the Kumool Movable Column and Saugor Field Division in 1S5S (Medal with
Clasp).
183 Colonel J. P. Pedler commanded a field detachment of cavalry, infantry and artillery of the Hyderabad
Contingent at the attack and capture of Copal from the rebels by the field force under Major Hughes on the
ist June 1858 ; and commanded successfully a detachment of all arms at Budlai in the Nizam's Dominions against
a body of Bheels on 20th November 1859, a service which elicited the favourable notice of the Governor General of
India.
i*« Colonel S. New was employed on field service in the Sangor and Nerbudda Territories and Raepore district
from nth October 1857 to 30th April 1858, and was present at Moorwarah 6th November 1S57, fnii affairs of
Kooagann and Junapanee (Medal).
18' Colonel J. L. Benwell was employed on field service with the Kamptee Movable Column in the Saugor and
Nerbudda Territories and Raepore district from 17th July 1857 to 3otli April 1S58, and was present in the engage¬
ment with the mutineers of the 52nd Beagal N.I. and rebels near Kuttengie 27th September 1857 and KhoneoPass
27th December 1837 (Medal).
'88 Colonel C. B. L. Smith was actively employed during thelate rebellion in India. In Dec. 1857 with a party of 50
troopers he entered Sanakhan hills, and surprised the main body of the insurgents—500 matchlock men—and captured
their leader, the rebel chief of Sanakhan, on whose head a price had been fixed. On the night of the i8th Jan. 185S
a portion of the troops stationed at Raepore mutinied, murdered the Sergeant Major, and seized the post guns. The
only English Officers present were Captains Smith and Rybat, and the nearest trustworthy force was iSo miles
distant, yet before the morning dawned these two Officers had suppressed the mutiny, and seized all the known
mutineers, who in due time were hanged in the loresence of their comrades. From March to the end of June ho
commanded a Detachment of troops against the rebels in the Sumbuljiore district, with whom he had various affairs.
For his services rendered in 1S57-58 ho received the thanks of the Governor General in Council, and the expression
of Her Majesty's gracious approval (Medal). In October and November i860 he was employed against the rebels
in the Manicghur hills, and drove them from all their defences, comiiletely dispersing the band.
"<' Colonel W. G. M. Strickland served in the Burmese war in 1852-53, and was present at the defence of Mar-
taban, and recapture of Billing (Medal with Clasp for Pegvi).
I'l Colonel E. B. Sladen served in the Burmese warin i852-53;presentat the relief of Peguin December 1852, and
at the second investment of Pegu in January 1853 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Conducted two successful expeditions
against rebel hill tribes of the Yoonzalee district Martaban Provinces in 1856 and 1S57 (dangerously wounded, and
received the thanks of the Supreme Government). Served with his Regiment (ist Madras Fusiliers) in the sup¬
pression of the Indian mutiny from February 1858, until the return of the Regiment to Madras. Present with Sir
J. Outram's Coi'ps of Observation at the Alumbagh, and at the capture ofLucknow; the Oude campaign from
June to December 1858 ; appointed Brigade Quarter Master to Sir A. Horsf'ord's Force ou the march to and capture
of Sultanpore; at the passage of the Goomtee; Brigade Quarter Master to Sir A. Hors ford's Force at the affair and
capture of guns at Daooadpore; acted as Orderly Officer to the Brigadier at this and other minor affairs CMedal
with Clasp).
•'^ Colonel H. H. Foord was employed in Turkey during the Russian war in 1854-56. Commanded some
Irregular Cavalry at the capture of Jungliah Naik and others at Jaulnah 1858.
183 Colonel W. H. Whitlock served during the second Burmese war, and was on board the steam frigate Se/cffri:'
during the naval engagement which took place off Rangoon on the 1 ith April 1852, when the enemy's stockades which
lined both banks of the river were destroyed. Joinedanddidduty with H.M.'s 51st Light Infantry as a volunteer,
and accompanied the storming party which assaulted and captured the White House stockade ou the 12th April 1S52.
Present during the operations in the vicinity of Rangoon, and at the final assault on the town on the 13th and i.(th
April. Present with the Rifle Company of his Regiment (which covered the advance of the Column) in the attack on
Pegu the zistNov. 1852, and on this last occasion received avery severe wound in the right elbow joint which disabled
the right arm for life (Modal with Clasp for Pegu). Served in Bengal during the mutiny as Aide de Camp to Sir
G. C. Whitlock, commanding the Saugor Field Division (Medal).
18* Colonel F. Horsley was employed in the suppression of the mutiny in Bengal during 1857-58.
I's Colonel H. T. Stuart served during the second Burmese war (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
187 Colonel H. O.Menzies was employed in suppressing the insurrection in the Pariah Kimedy district in 1856-57.
'88 Colonel H. D. Cloete served during the second Burmese war, and was present at the storm and capture oi
Pegu 21st November 1852, when he was dangerously wounded by a musket-ball in the chest, was also constantly
engaged with the enemy during the .ascent of the Pegu river in the leading steamer (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).'
''"'■' Colonel O. F. Smithers was employed on field service in the Saugor and Nerlnidda Territories in sup¬
pression of the Indian mutiny fr-om 6th February 1858; present at the affairs of Jeegungh, Kobrai, battle of Banda,
and surrender of Kirwee (Medal with Clasp).
2"* Colonel A. C. Hay served with the Saugor Field Division, and was present at Shecgnm and Kobrai; com¬
manded a company with the advanced guard at the battle of Banda; was with Captain Hilli.ard's detachment at
Tolakunjarum (Medal with Clasp).
205 Colonel J. W. Orr served in Burmah 1B52-53 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Also with Major General
Whitlock's Force in suppression of the mutiny in Bengal in 1858-59, and was present at the surrender of the rebel
Narrain Rao at Kirwee; was left in charge of the camp on the i6th.December 1858, when the force under
Brigadier MacDuff moved out to attack the rebels at Girwassah.
'"<• Colonel F. Gadsden served in Arracan during the Burmese war, and in the Sambulpoor districts during
the disturbances in 1857-58.
208 Colonel H. G. Thomson was on field service with a detachment of the 35th Foot against Hill Karccns near
Shuay-gheen from loth April to ist May 1856, and was present at the action at Palipoon.
212 ColonelW. Peyton served during the Buimese war in 1852-53, and was present during the operations before
and attack on Rangoon on the nth 12th 13th and 14th April 1S52; assault and capture of Bassein 19th May 1833
(Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Was also employed with field detachments on the Hyderabad Frontier from loth
November 1858 to 12th March 1859.
^ii' Colonel G. N. Stephens was employed in suppressing the insurrection in the Pariah Kimedy district in
1856 and 1857.
^'■i Lt.Colonel T. Wakefield was employed on field service with the Kamptee Movable Column in the Saugor and
Nerbudda Territories from 17th July to 22nd November 1857, and fi-om 28th January to 30th April 1858 in the Rae¬
pore district, and was present at the affair of Balakote and in the engagement with the mutineers of the 52nd Ben¬
gal Native Infantry near Kuttengee 27th September 1857 (Medal).
' '"5 Lt.Colonel H. S. Robinson was actively employed during the mutinj' against the insurgents in the Sunibulporc
district in 1857-58.
^" Lt.Colonel W. M. Lane was actively engaged during the Googaira rebellion as Commandant of a Belocch
Levy, with the column under tlie command of Major Chamberlain in 1857 (Medal).
^'' Lt.Colonel T. B. E. Tennant served in Kimedy in 1836, and was present at the attack and capture of Woojic
Giiddah i5lh May 1856.
