Persian square (horse wounded, Medal with Clasp). Served with the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh
Rose, including siege and capture of Ratghur, relief of Saugor, capture of Garrokota, forcing of the Muddenpore
Pass, siege and storm of Jhansi, battle of Koonch, battle of Muttra, the three engagements at Jalowlee on the River
Jumna (acted as Quarter Master General to the Second Brigade), capture of Calpee, capture of the cantonment of
Morar, final pursuit of the enemy under Sir Robert Napier, battle of Jowra Alipore ; also served against the rebels
in the Jhansi and Jaloun districts during the monsoon of 1858 (Medal with Clasp).
821 Colone Fi. W. M. Spring served throughout the Abyssinian campaign from 23rd Dec. 1867 as Commissary of
Ordnance and was in charge of the Ordnance Depot established at Senafe (Medal).
625 Colonel Charles Steel served with the 12th Lancers in the Crimeafrom 29th July 1855, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, und Turkish Medal).
627 Colonel Fitzroy Stephen served as Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion Rifie Brigade during the Indian campaign
°f 1857-58, including the action of Cawnpoie, siege and capture of Lucknow, and battle of Nawabgunge (Medal
with Clasp). Served in the North-West Frontier campaign of 1863-64 as Staff Officer of the Field Force under
Colonel Macdonald (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Afghan war in 1878-79 with the Peshawur Valley Field
Force and was present at the attack and capture of All Musjid and with the expeditions into the Bazar and
Laghman Valleys (Medal with Clasp).
628 Colonel F. G. Steuart served with the Bombay Column in the Puniaub campaign of 1848-49, and was present at
tJie siegeand surrender of Mooltan (Medal with Clasp). Ssrved with the Persian Expedition in 1856-57, including
the capture of Mohumra (Medal with Clasp) .
629 Colonel John Stevenson served with the 54th Regiment during the Indian Mutiny, including Lord Clyde's
eampaign in Oude in 1838-59 (Medal). Served also in the Bhootan Expedition of 1864-65 (Medal with Clasp).
631 Colonel G. G. Stewart served in the China war in i860, and was present at the capture of Sinho and Tangku
acid at the occupation of Tientsin (Medal with Clasp).
02 Colonel H. J. Stock served in the Afghan war in 1880 as Brigade Major with the Southern Afghanistan
Field Force (Medal). Served with the Zhob Valley Expedition in 1884. [See also Civil Decorations for Gallantry,

633 Colonel H. W. Stockley served with the Persian Expedition in 1857, and was present at the bombardment of
Mehumrah (Medal with Clasp).
634 Colonel W. Stoddart was employed on field service in the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories in the suppres-
Mun of the Indian Mutiny from 9th February 1858.
636 Colonel A. Straghan served with the 74th Highlanders in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-5S. and was
present at the storm and capture of Shorapore (Medal). Served with the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry
in the Egyptian war of 1S82, and commanded the Battalion at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches,
CB., Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star).
637 Colonel C. D. A. Straker served in the Afghan war ia 1879-80 (Medal).
638 Colonel H. AV. Stroud served with the 98th Regiment in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49 (Medal). Also a ;
Peshawnr, under Sir Sydney Cotton during the mutinies from 1857 to i860.
639 Colonel R. W. Studdy was employed in the Transport Department with the Northern Afghanistan Field
Force in 1878-79 (Medal). Served with the ist Battalion Manchester Regiment in the Egyptian war of 1882 (Medal,
and Khedive's Star).
640 Colonel N. G. Sturt served in the Abyssinian campaign and commanded No. 2 Company Bombay Sappers
which did excellent service on the Senafe Pass and the Sooro Defile, and was present at the action of Arogee and
capture of Magdala ( Medal) .
641 Colonel M. S. J. Sunderland served in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 with the ist Battalion of the Royal Susses
Regiment, and took part in the operations of the Desert Column under Sir Herbert Stewart, including the action
at Abu Klea and the engagement at Metammeh, where he commanded a half-battalion (twice mentioned in
despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel. Medal with two Clasps, and Khedive's Star). Served in the Hazara campaign
in 1888 in command of the 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment (mentioned in despatches, JJSO., and Medal
with Clasp 1.
642 Colonel J. F. Sweeney served with the 12th Regiment in the Kaffir war of 1851-53 (Medal).
643 Colonel G. A. Sweny, as a Lieutenant in the 4th Regiment, served in Abyssinia as Aide de Camp to Brigadier
General VVilby ; was afterwards appointed Provost Marshal and Baggage Master to the ist Brigade ist Division,
and was present at the action of Arogee and capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches, promoted Captain
for service, Medal).
644 Colonel G. C. Swiney served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-5S with the 7th Hussars and was pre-
sent in an engagement near Allahabad in Dec. 1857.
647 Colonel A. Swinton served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58 (Medal).
648 Colonel E. D. Tarleton served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1858, and was present at the siege and capture
of Lucknow (Medal with Clasp).
649 Colonel W. J. Tathani served in the operations in the Malay Peninsula in 1874-75 (Medal with Clasp).
650 Colonel A. Taylor served throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1S48-49, including the affair of Kamnuggur,
and battles of Sadoolapore, Chillianwallah, and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps) .
652 Colonel J. B. Taylor served with field detachments on the Hyderabad Frontier from 16th November 1S58 to
12th March 1859.
653 Colonel P. T. H. Taylor served in the Egyptian war of 1882, and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir
(mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp, 3rd class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star).
654 Colonel R. A. Taylor served the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the siege of Mooltan. attack of the
suburbs, storm of the city, and surrender of the fortress : also the battle of Goojerat, surrender of the Sikh Army
at Rawul Pindee, and pursuit of the Affghans to the Khyber Pass (Medal with two Clasps). Engaged in sup-
pressing the mutiny of the 62nd and 69th Bengal N.I. and Horse Artillery at Mooltan on 31st Aug. 1S53 (Medal).
655 Colonel T. Taylor served as a volunteer with the 24th Foot against the mutineers of the 14th Bengal
Native Infantry at Jhelum on the 7th July 1857 (Medal).
656 Sir Edward Thackeray served in the Indian Mutiny campaign, including the actions on the Hindun, battle
of Budleekestrai, throughout the siege of Delhi (Victoria Cross) ; was afterwards present at the actions of Gun-
geree, Pi-ttialee, and Mynpoory, siege and capture of Lucknow, throughout the Rohilcuuu campaign, including
the attack on Fort Rooyah, action of Alygunge*, and capture of Bareilly ; served also the Oude campaign of 185S-59.
(Medal with two Clasps) ; was awarded ttte H\T " for cool intrepidity and characteristic daring in extinguishing a
fire in the Delhi Magazine enclosure, on the 16th September 1857, under a close and heavy musketry fire from the
enemy, at the imminent risk of his life from the explosion of combustible stores in the shed in which the fire
occurred." Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part in the advance to Cabul with the force under
Brigadier General Charles Gough, including the engagement at Jugdulluck — severely wounded (mentioned in
despatches, Medal with Clasp).
658 Colonel H. Thompson served with the 10th Regiment in the Crimea, subsequent to the fall of Sebastopol,
from the 9th March 1856 until the withdrawal of'the Army. Served as Adjutant of the Bijnour Rajpoot Levy
during the operations in Bundlecund under Brigadier Wheler in 1859; and as Brigade Major with the Cachar
column of the Looshai Expeditionary Force under Sir G. Bourchier in 1871-72 (mentioned in despatches, Medal
with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served in the Afghan war in 1S80 (Medal).
659 Colonel H. M. Thompson served in the Eastern campaign in 1855-56. and was present at the siege and fall of
Sebastopol, including the assault on the Quarries on the 8th June, the capture of the Cemetery and Rifle Pits of the
18th June, and with the Reserve at the attack on the Redan of the 8th September (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish
Medal). Also served in the operations against the Taeping rebels in China in 1863.
660 Colonel Ross Thompson served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part with the Hissarik and Lughman
Expeditions (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal).
661 Colonel M. Tilford served with the 2nd Battalion doth Rifles throughout the Kaffir war of 1851-53 (Medal).
In the suppression of the Indian mutiny in 1858 in the Shahabad district (Medal). Also served throughout the
campaign of i860 in China, and was present in the action of Sinho, the taking of Tangku, the capture of the Taka.
