380 HYMNS.
2 Where is the blessedness I knew
When first I saw the Lord ?
Where is the soul-refreshing view
Of Jesus, and his word?
3 What peacefnl hours I then enjoy’d! i i
How sweet their mem’ry still! M
But they have left an aching void, | ,
The world can never fill.
4 Return, O holy Dove, return,
Sweet messenger of rest!
I hate the sins that made thee mourn, > . j
And drove thee from my breast. 1
5 The dearest idol I have known,
Whate’er that idol be,
Help me to tear it from thy throne,
And worship only thee.
6 So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame ;
So purer light shall mark the road ,
That leads me to the Lamb. j
380.
O that I were as in months past! Job xxix. 2.
1 CWEET was the time when first I felt
^ The Saviour’s pard’ning blood
Applied, to cleanse my soul from guilt.
And seal my peace with God.
2 Soon as the morn the light reveal’d.
His praises tun’d my tongue;
And when the ev’ning shades prevail’d, i
His love was all my song.
3 In vain the tempter spread his wiles.
The world no more could charm :
I liv’d upon my Saviour’s smiles,
And lean’d upon his arm.
