ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of An Comunn was
held in the Town Hall, Fort William, on
Saturday, 8th October, at 10 a.m., the Rev.
Dr. Neil Ross in the chair. The minute of
last meeting was held as read and approved.
The Secretary reported that the following
members had been elected to the Executive
Council as the result of the recent ballot,
viz.:—Mr. John Bannerman, Mrs. Burnley
Campbell, Rev. Malcolm MacLeod, M.A.,
Sir Alexander N. MacEwen, Mr. Charles
Campbell, M.B.E., Captain George I.
Campbell of Succoth, Mr. Hector Mac-
Dougall, Dr. Colin Sinclair, Rev. Hector
Cameron, and Mr. Donald Graham, M.A.
The Secretary intimated that Mr. James C.
MacPhee, who was next in order of the
ballot, would take the place of Mr. Donald
MacDonald, Inverness, who had been
appointed vice-president. His term would
be for one year.
The annual reports and financial state¬
ments were submitted, and adopted.
Sheriff MacMaster Campbell moved “That
the money already subscribed to the Musical
Scholarship Fund be, with the consent of
the subscribers to be obtained, made
immediately available towards the musical
education of Mr. Duncan M. Morrison,
Stornoway, who possesses competent know¬
ledge of Gaelic; that it be remitted to the
Executive Council to co-operate with the
Lewis and Harris, and other Highland
Societies in Glasgow, in the raising of the
balance of the cost of Mr. Morrison’s main¬
tenance and education during his two years’
course of training at the Scottish National
Academy of Music, Glasgow, the Executive
Council being hereby authorised to make
such grant, in addition to the fund thus to
be raised, as they may, in their discretion,
consider suitable and proper. ’ ’ Lady Elspeth
Campbell seconded, and the motion was
unanimously adopted.
The auditors were re-appointed,
The President cordially thanked the Local
Committee for their admirable and highly
successful work in connection with the Mod.
It was unanimously agreed to hold next
year’s Mod in Glasgow.
Mr. Alex. MacKechnie moved “That An
Comunn take immediate steps to initiate a
movement amongst the Gaelic-speaking
children on lines similar to the Welsh League
of Youth. ’ ’ Mr. Malcolm MacLeod seconded,
and suggested the motion should be sent to
Clann an Fhraoich to consider as to the best
means of giving effect to it. This was agreed
to.
Mr. George E. Marjoribanks moved “That,
beginning from the first meeting after the
Mod of 1933, all meetings of the Executive
Council of An Comunn Gaidhealach shall be
conducted in Gaelic, and in Gaelic only.’’
Mr. Angus Robertson seconded. Mr.
Malcolm MacLeod moved that one meeting
in the year be conducted in Gaelic. Mrs.
Iain Campbell seconded. On a vote being
taken, 67 voted for Mr. Marjoribanks’
motion, and 35 for Mr. MacLeod’s. The
motion, not having received the support of
two-thirds of those present, fell.
Mrs. J. R. Colquhoun moved “That Rule
25 of the Constitution and Rules (1911) of
the Association be altered to read as follows :
‘All meetings of the Executive Council, other
than the preliminary meeting, shall be held
in Glasgow.’ ’’ Mr. Hugh MacLean
seconded. Mr. Donald Graham moved the
previous question, and Colonel Greenhill
Gardyne seconded. On a vote being taken,
20 voted for the motion and 34 for the
previous question.
Mr. Donald MacDonald moved “That the
expenses of the President of An Comunn at
the Annual National Mod be a charge on the
Mod expenses.’’ Mr. MacFarlane Barrow
seconded. Mr. Angus Robertson moved the
previous question, and Mr. John MacDonald,
Oban, seconded. On a vote being taken, 30
voted for the motion and 20 for the previous
question. It was agreed that the motion
should apply to this year’s Mod.
On the suggestion of Mr. Malcolm
MacLeod, it was agreed to recommend to
the Executive Council that one meeting in
the year should be held in Gaelic.
A vote of thanks to the President termin¬
ated the meeting.
The preliminary meeting of the Executive
Council followed, and Standing Committees
were appointed.
