AN GAIDHEAL.
143
Dear Sir,—In the preface to Dwelly’s Dictionary
and again at the beginning of the work itself,
reference is made to the existence of an Appendix
of words received too late for insertion in the body
of the work. May I suggest that if this Appendix
is in existence, its publication would be a great
boon to all students of Gaelic and a fitting tribute
to the memory of that great man?—Yours,
E. MacC.
GAELIC SCHOOL BOOKS FOR CHILDREN.
Dear Sir,—We have few Gaelic books that make
interesting or attractive reading for children aged
10-14 years. Leabhraichean Sgoile Gaidhlige are
good text books; attractive, perhaps, in parts, but
we have no story books that will capture the child’s
mind as will, for instance, “Robinson Crusoe’’ or
“Treasure Island.”
Here is a serious matter. At this particular
period a child’s mind can be led into any channel
almost, but, sad to say, there is no happy channel
of Gaelic literature to open to him. I do not wish
to be misunderstood; remember that I am thinking
of library or home reading books for children of
the age stated. We require a series of Gaelic
story books of an interesting type and at a low
price.
Here, I am of opinion, we could borrow from
Irish both in translation and method of teaching.
In Eire they have overcome this problem, for now
a steady flow of fresh Irish literature enters the
life-stream of the schools. It might be helpful to
Gaelic teachers and others genuinely interested in
Gaelic children to have even a review from time
to time of the latest Irish Gaelic literature. Certain
of these books might easily be adapted for use in
our schools.
Meantime Gaelic teaching in Scotland is “dead
language” teaching. There is no excuse for this.
The language is being buried alive, for I doubt if
many teachers practise in school even what they
teach.
