EXTENSION OF GAELIC
BROADCASTS.
THE LATE MR. ARCHIBALD
MACFARLANE, J.P., SALEN, MULL.
The B.B.C. announces that broadcasts in Gaelic
will be extended in the fourth week of April to
serve in greater measure the needs of Gaelic¬
speaking listeners in remote Highland areas and in
the more accessible industrial belt of Scotland.
Beginning on Tuesday, 23rd April, five-minute news
summaries in Gaelic will be broadcast in the Home
Service programme every Tuesday and Saturday at
10.30 p.m. The weekly half-hour broadcast on
Wednesdays will remain, but will no longer be
curtailed by the inclusion of news items. A
religious service in Gaelic will be held once a
month, and dramatic, concert, and ceilidh enter¬
tainments will be presented on the other evenings.
The alteration of programme arrangements
follows requests made in letters from listeners,, and
by a deputation from An Comunn Gaidhealach.
The B.B.C. finds that while the news broadcasts
are essential to Gaelic speakers living in remote
areas where newspapers are received infrequently,
Highlanders who live in cities and so have ready
access to broadcast and printed news prefer that
the entertainment broadcasts should not be cur¬
tailed by news items. It is hoped that the new
arrangement will suit both types of listener.

We regret to record the death of Mr. Archibald
MacFarlane, Salen, Mull, whose passing is a
distinct loss to the members and friends of the
Salen Branch of An Comunn Gaidhealach.
From the time the Branch was formed in 1912,
the late Mr. MacFarlane identified himself whole¬
heartedly with the movement and was one of its
most staunch supporters in the Island. He served
for three years as President of the Branch, and was
also for a term the Branch’s representative to the
Executive Council.
He was a fluent speaker of Gaelic and his talks
were always listened to with keen appreciation.
His sense of humour and power of delineating local
characters of bygone days never failed to attract
the attention of his hearers.
A building contractor by trade, he was well
known beyond the bounds of Mull. The new Public
Hall at Salen will keep his memory green whenever
the Salen Branch meets there.
