REPORT

ON THE WORKING OF THE

BURMA GOVERNMENT MEDICAL SCHOOL, RANGOON

FOR THE YEAR 1914-15.

The year commenced with 32 students on the rolls, namely 14 in the
second year, 7 in the third year and 11 in the fourth year classes. One of the 14
second year students was a remanded public student. Of the 11 fourth year
students, 2 died of plague in July 1914, hence there were only 30 pupils at the
commencement of the session as follows:—

Second year students 14
Third year students 7
Fourth year students 9
Total 30

       2. Government sanctioned an increase in the number of stipendiary pupils
from 10 to 20 to take effect from the commencement of the session of 1914.
Consequently, when the new sessions commenced on the 20th July 1914, 20 new
public students were selected, 8 also being selected as private students. One of
the latter left after a few weeks and 2 of the selected public students failed to join
the school, and 2 out of the 18, who actually joined, were removed after the first
quarterly test examination held in September 1914 for being absent without leave.
Four private students who did well in this examination were, therefore, taken in
their places on applications made by them. Of the 26 new admissions, only 9 had
the necessary educational qualifications, and the remainder, with a few exceptions,
who passed only the 8th and 7th standards, either failed or studied up to the
Matriculation class. Three old public students (namely, 2 from the third year and
one from the first year), who were removed for failure in the sessional examination
of March 1914, were re-admitted in October 1914 as private students, but the
latter (who was admitted to the first year class) did not attend the school regularly
and had to be removed.

       3. The health of the students was good and the conduct on the whole satis-
factory, but the attendance was not as good as in former years.

       4. The following is a detailed account of instruction given during the year:—
