Experiences of the Great War

Tending the wounded at the Front

Elsie Knocker quickly realised that many of the men who were dying while they were being transported back from the Front in ambulances could be saved if they were treated immediately after being wounded.

So in Belgium she and Mairi Chisholm set off for the Front and there established a medical post in the cellar of a house in Pervyse.

Their bravery and the physical and spiritual benefits which they brought to the wounded would lead the Belgians to refer to them as the 'madonnas of Pervyse'.
