| Description | Helen Bannerman's 'Tale of Little Black Sambo' was a pioneering picture book for children and an instant success when it was published in 1899. Bannerman (1862-1946) was born in Edinburgh, but her famous book was inspired by and written in India where she lived for 30 years. Her story of a black child's adventures with some tigers is now a controversial work due to its highly problematic title, but is an influential and skilfully told tale. |
