finals innumerable. Two of his most
important fixtures (to the clubs certainly) were Burnley v.
Notts County, and Blackburn Rovers v. Burnley in the
Football League test games, now no longer played.
BARROW, D., Quartermaster-Sergeant, R.E., Tidworth
House, Tidworth, near Andover, Hants. Born at
Rochester, Dent, July 29, 1866. Did very little playing.
The club to which he had the honour to belong (Royal
Engineers, Aldershot) had a very strong eleven, and it took
a very good player to get a place in the team. Commenced
in 1894 to referee in military matches at Aldershot, a goad
training ground, and in 1895 founded the Aldershot branch
of the Referees' Association, and became hon. sec. of the
Aldershot P.A. Conducted many- important matches on
every ground in the Southern and Western Leagues, and in
the F.A. Cup, the latest in the latter competition being
Woolwich Arsenal v. Luton in 1901-2. Has officiated in the
final for the
,
Hants, Gloucester, Dorset, and other cup-ties.
Unable to officiate during 1902-3 season owing to military
duties, but anticipates being in the fray during season
1903-4.
BARDWELL, R. F., Stone House, Ipswich. Born at Ipswich.
Played for Cowells Athletic for upwards of twelve years.
Won county colours for Suffolk as a half-back. Owing to an
accident, which developed badly into "football knee," was
forced to relinquish play, but, a season's rest saw hint back
again in the field as referee. Commenced to referee in 1895.
Has conducted many important cup-ties in the Eastern -
Districts, F.A. and Amateur Cups, Suffolk and Norfolk
Charities, . and the urincipal league and inter-county
matches. Registered Class I. referee, season 1901-2.
BEARDSLEY, F. W., 8, Coxwell Road Plunistead, London,
S.E. Born at Nottingham.. Playea

Forest and Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. One of the founders
of the Arsenal. Commenced to referee- about 1895-6.
Attached to the Football League, Southern League,
Western League, &c. Most important games officiated in:
Aston Villa v. Sunderland, West Bromwich v. Stoke, Tot-
tenham v. Southampton. I
BLACK, S. J., Calais Road, Horninglow, Burton-oil-Trent.
Born at Burton-on-Trent, February 27, 1864. Played for
Burton Wanderers. Left Burton to finish apprenticeship at
Manchester. Joined Newton Heath L. and Y. by .invita-
tion. With this club .six years (captain four seasons),
and played in Final Manchester Cun first. year of existence.
Captain of the Manchester F.A. v. Liverpool Association on
two ocasions, and played in most of the Manchester Associa-
