Somecuriousreasonsforholdingaconvivialeven-
ing,orsoitmightappeartousatthepresentday,are
apparentintheminutes.Forinstance,in1794,some
bottlesofwinewereintroducedtodrinktothememory
of"LordRodneyandthegloriousi2thofApril."
True,RodneydefeatedtheFrenchFleetoffDominica
intheWestIndiesonthei2thofApril,butthatwas
in1782!Lessthanamonthlater,3rdMay1794,more
bottlesofwinewereconsumed,withsuitabletoastsof
patriotismandloyalty"forthegoodnewsreceived
fromthealliedarmiesandtheWestIndies."This
celebrationwassoonfollowedbyagreateroneon
14thJune1794,whentheMagistrates,havingordered
illuminationsforthevictoryobtainedbyLordHowe
withtheBritishGrandFleetovertheFrenchFleetonthe
firstofthatmonth,noneofthemembersdinedattheclub-
house,allbeingengagedinthegeneraljoyinthetown.
Butitdidnotalwaysrequiretheincentiveofan
anniversaryofagloriousbattleorafamousvictoryat
seatoprovideanexcuseforaglorificationattheold
Golfers'TavernatBruntsfield.Whenamember
becameabenedict,ortookonpaternalcares,the
occasionsweredulyhonouredbythe"usualfineof
champagne."Anexample,in182o,maybequoted
whenPeterMacDowall,Writer,whojoinedtheSociety
in1811,madehisfirstappearanceattheClubdinner
sincehismarriagetwoyearspreviously,andtendered
halfadozenofwinetothemeeting,apologisingat
thesametimeforhislongabsenceandpromisingto
bemoreregularinhisattendanceinfuture!Halfa
dozenofMadeirawaspresentedbyJ.S.Simpsonin
1823tocommemorateafriend'sappointmentasCon-
veneroftheTradesofEdinburgh!

Among the material from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are match programmes, club histories, and handbooks. From the late 20th century are promotional materials to encourage greater diversity in sport. Most items cover sports activities in Scotland. There are also publications relating to the Olympics and international matches. |
