withaviewthathastymatchesontheshortcoursein
thelighteveningsmustbesubservienttotheetiquette
ofthedinner-table—paybeforeplay!orhaveyour
gameearly.Businesshadtobetransactedbefore
dinner,ordelayedtillthefollowingquarterlymeeting.
EtiquettewasofparamountimportanceattheBurgess
dinnersinthelateeighteenthcentury.Nocandidate
foradmissionwasallowedtodinewiththeSociety
unlesshehadbeenreceivedasamemberbeforedinner,
and"nogentlemanshallpresumetositdowntodinner
untiltheCaptainhastakentheChair"andtheguests
properlyintroduced.ThisisreminiscentoftheGeorg-
ianperiod,whendinnerswereheldingreatrespect,
andmayhavebeeninfluencedbyofficers'messetiquette.
Eachmemberhad,in1804,tocontributeoneguinea
tothefundstoenabletheTreasurertoreimbursethe
landlordwhentheattendanceatdinnerongolfingdays
wasinsufficienttomakeitapayingconcern.Dinner,
atis.9d.each,wasprovidedforeightmembersevery
Saturday;failingthatnumberbeingpresent,the
differenceinthebillwasmadeupoutofthefunds.
Thelegalfraternitywerewellrepresentedinthe
BurgessSociety,circa1780,astheyaretothisday,and
itmaybeobservedthattheJulymeetingswereheld
onthefirstSaturdayofthatmonth"inregardthe
CourtofSessionwasthensitting,anditwasinconven-

Among the material from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are match programmes, club histories, and handbooks. From the late 20th century are promotional materials to encourage greater diversity in sport. Most items cover sports activities in Scotland. There are also publications relating to the Olympics and international matches. |
