whetherheattendedornot.InApril1775itwas
reportedthattheweeklymeetingshadlatelybeenill-
attendedand,infuture,eacHmemberwasrequiredto
attendthreetimeseveryquarter,orforfeitsixpencefor
eachtimeabsent,themoneytobeappliedtowardsthe
billfortheannualmeetingdinner.Atthisperiodno
memberwasallowedtoleavethedinner-tableforthe
purposeofplayinggolfwithoutpermissionofthe
Captainuntilthebillforthenightwascalledandpaid
for,underpenaltynotexceeding3s.Thisprobably
withaviewthathastymatchesontheshortcoursein
thelighteveningsmustbesubservienttotheetiquette
ofthedinner-table—paybeforeplay!orhaveyour
gameearly.Businesshadtobetransactedbefore
dinner,ordelayedtillthefollowingquarterlymeeting.
EtiquettewasofparamountimportanceattheBurgess
dinnersinthelateeighteenthcentury.Nocandidate
foradmissionwasallowedtodinewiththeSociety
unlesshehadbeenreceivedasamemberbeforedinner,
and"nogentlemanshallpresumetositdowntodinner
untiltheCaptainhastakentheChair"andtheguests
properlyintroduced.ThisisreminiscentoftheGeorg-
ianperiod,whendinnerswereheldingreatrespect,
andmayhavebeeninfluencedbyofficers'messetiquette.
Eachmemberhad,in1804,tocontributeoneguinea
tothefundstoenabletheTreasurertoreimbursethe
landlordwhentheattendanceatdinnerongolfingdays
wasinsufficienttomakeitapayingconcern.Dinner,
atis.9d.each,wasprovidedforeightmembersevery
Saturday;failingthatnumberbeingpresent,the
differenceinthebillwasmadeupoutofthefunds.
Thelegalfraternitywerewellrepresentedinthe
BurgessSociety,circa1780,astheyaretothisday,and
itmaybeobservedthattheJulymeetingswereheld
onthefirstSaturdayofthatmonth"inregardthe
CourtofSessionwasthensitting,anditwasinconven-
ientforcertainofthememberstoattendontheFriday."
