A MON COUSIN, MONSIEUR DE ROSSE.
Mon cousin, j’ay este forte ayse d’avoir entendu de voz
nouvelles et de vostre bon portement parce que Ton vous
a tenu pour mort en ceste court I’espace de xl jours.
Monseigneur de Glascow1 s’en va de pardela, lequel ay
prye de conferer avecques vous de mes affaires affin que
vous et luy me serviez de solliciteurs a 1’endroit de Monsieur
mon pere,2 et vous prye y vouloir si bien besongner que
je puisse estre en esquipaige tel qu’il m’est deue pour de
meilleure volunte faire service a mon maistre. Aultre-
ment il seroit besoing que jamais je ne fusse venu de
pardeca. Et parce que je ne doubte du grand desir
qu’aves a mon bien et advancement, ne vous en feray
plus long discours, remettant toutes nouvelles a la suffi-
sance de ce porteur ; et sur ce point me recommenderay
bien fort et de bon cueur a vostre bonne grace et souve-
nance, priant Dieu, mon cousin, vour donner en sante
bonne et longue vye. De Compiegne ce xxe decembre
1552.

From Louis de Lorraine, Bishop of Troyes, to his sister
1552. Vol. ii. 149.
He will not attempt to give her more news of Metz and of the recapture
of Hesdin than she receives from the King and the Cardinal. She will
however he glad to hear that, after the anxiety they have had about the
Duke d’Aumale on account of his capture and wounds, they have heard
of his good health. There is little hope of freeing him while these wars
continue, because of the large ransom they ask, which is 100,000 ecus.
The Cardinal, Madame de Valentinois, and the writer are doing all they
