6 February, 1412 Reg Aven 338, 151V-152V
To the abbot of Holyrood of Edinburgh and the abbot of Sweet¬
heart. Mandate to provide William Manuel, elemosinary of the
monastery of Melros, monk and priest, to the abbacy of the mon¬
astery of Newbotel, o.cist., and to permit him to be consecrated
by some catholic bishop who should also receive from him the oath
of fealty, which is then to be sent in letters patent under William’s
seal to the pope by the next envoy. David, abbot of Melrose, and
several other abbots of the Cistercian order in Scotland had charged
John Gugi calling himself abbot of Newbotel with alienating and
dissipating the goods of the monastery. Later, following an appeal
by the monks of the monastery to David, who as pater abbas of
Newbotel had the right according to the constitutions of the order
of visiting and correcting abuses in that monastery, the said David
finally with the consent and advice of the other abbots, sentenced
John to be deprived; but he with the aid of powerful friends had
intruded himself upon the abbey and continued to waste its goods.
Subsequently mandatory letters had been granted to deprive John
if the above charges were proven, and so to prevent harm to the
monastery by a long vacancy if John should be deprived, the above
mandate of provision is granted on behalf of William.
