l80 LETTERS OF POPE BENEDICT XIII
a canonry of Moray, the prebend of Ryny, and the said parish
church of Caldercomitis, and if the archdeaconry should have cure
of souls he is dispensed to retain the parish church along with it,
but he is held to demit the canonry and prebend.1

To the bishops of Candida Casa and Brechin. Mandate. Alice Mur,
kinswoman of Robert, duke of Albany, and Mariote Lethe, nuns of
the monastery of Hadyngton, o.cist. which is wont to be governed
by a prioress, had shown that a certain Joneta de Wardlau, nun of
the monastery, without being dispensed of a defect of birth as the
daughter of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, had
intruded herself as prioress of the said monastery; and Henry, bishop
of St Andrews, had commanded the aforesaid Alice and Mariote
under pain of excommunication to receive her as prioress and show
her obedience and reverence. Alice and Mariote had thereupon
appealed to the pope and so Henry pronounced sentence of ex-
communication against them, but Alice and Mariote again appealed
to the pope. The mandatories are to decide if the sentence of ex-
communication had been pronounced after a legitimate appeal had
been made; and if so it is to be denounced, and they are then to
proceed legitimately to hear the case, binding their decision by papal
authority.

governor of Scotland, to summon and examine Joneta de Wardlau
who is said to occupy the monastery of Hadyngton, o.cist., wont
to be governed by a prioress, obtained by her on the death in those
parts of Alice, late prioress, without a papal dispensation of her
