2-9 BENEDICT XIII

of Selkyrk, Glasgow diocese, value not exceeding 50 merks sterling,
vacant by the death outside the curia of William Alan, late vicar,
upon whose death because of delay in presentation by Patrick, the
abbot and convent of Kelso, osb, the said presentation devolved to
Mathew, bishop of Glasgow, who provided John to the said church;
but he doubted the validity of his provision because the church was
said to be vacant not as above, but because William Alan had held
it for more than a year without being raised to the priesthood and
without a dispensation. John, nephew of Mathew, bishop of Glasgow,
is to be examined and confirmed in possession of the church, vacant
in any of the above ways, even if the said William had been a papal
chaplain and the church was thus specially reserved to papal pro¬
vision, and notwithstanding that he is known to hold the parish
church of Tywald, and on his peaceful assecution to Selkyrk he is
held to demit Tywald.

25 November, 1402 Reg Aven 307, 173-4
To the official of Glasgow. Mandate to collate John de Wegalle,
canon of Holyrood, and priest, to the perpetual vicarage of Kyn-
gorne, St Andrews diocese. Some time before the abbot and convent
of Holyrood had petitioned that their resources were diminishing
and so letters in mandate were sent to David, abbot of Melrose, to
annex and unite to the said abbey of Holyrood the parish church of
Kyngome, which they were already holding in proprios usus with
half its garbal teinds; but with the new union they were to obtain
all its fruits and revenues. The church was to be served by a perpetual
vicar chosen from one of the canons, who was to have twenty merks
sterling to support himself, and they were to obtain the church on
the death of, or cession of it by the present rector, Walter Belle. He
had subsequently resigned the church through his procurator
William de Mannel, monk of Melrose, into the hands of Francis,
bishop of Imola, at the apostolic see, and the pope grants the col¬
lation as above to the said John de Wegalle, canon of Holyrood.
