Awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty. When his company commander had become a casualty, he led his
company forward with the utmost gallantry, although wounded in the
face, and captured a machine-gun emplacement, which was causing great
hindrance to the advance. He continued to lead his company until he was
again wounded and compelled to desist. (January 1918.)
Bar to the Military Cross awarded to Lieut. W. R. Tovani, M.C, Royal
Highlanders, attd. l/6th Bn. Royal Highlanders.
During operations of 24/26th October 1918, near Monchaux and Famars,
he displayed magnificent leadership in two attacks, in both of which his
company did excellent work, capturing a large number of prisoners and
machine-guns. All through he showed a fine example of courage to his
men, and ability to deal with extremely difficult situations.

Awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty. He displayed the utmost skill and endurance in clearing the wounded
between the lines after the attack. Through the day he carried out his task
under continuous shell fire, and was thus instrumental in saving many
lives. (18th July 1917.)
