2nd LIEUTENANT JAMES PHILIP PURVES, Uganda.
Joined Oxford University Cadet Corps in June 1916 and received Com-
mission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
in October 1916, and was latterly attached to the 7th Argyll and Sutherland
Highlanders. Went to France in January 1917, and was killed in the
neighbourhood of Bethune on nth April 1918 whilst leading his men
against the Germans in the Spring Offensive.
LIEUTENANT WILLIAM ROLAND RAINNIE, 3 Carlton Street,
Edinburgh.
Received Commission as 2nd Lieutenant Royal Engineers (Signals) in
February 1915. Went to France in January 1918 and was attached to
5th Army Signalling Company, and to G.H.Q. Signalling Company until
July 1918.
MAJOR THOMAS RANKEN, T.D., 7 Albyn Place, Edinburgh.
Rejoined 8th Royal Scots from T.F. Reserve on 5th August 1915. Acted as
Musketry Officer from February to April 1915, and as Brigade Major from
April to June 1915 to 2/1 Lothian Infantry Brigade. Thereafter at-
tached to General Staff, Scottish and Northern Commands, until 25th
February 1919.
MAJOR WILLIAM BLACK RANKIN, 3 Coates Crescent, Edinburgh.
Major in 4th Highland Light Infantry, Special Reserve, which he joined
in 1900, and was mobilised in August 1914. In November 1915 attached
to 1st Garrison Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, and in January
1916 went to India. Returned to this country on sick leave and
attached to 1st Garrison Battalion Highland Light Infantry until
December 1918.
CAPTAIN JOHN RICHARDSON, 9 South Charlotte Street, Edinburgh.
(Apprentice.)
Received Commission in 8th Royal Scots in November 1914. Served in
this country and in France. Wounded August 1916. Rejoined in May
1917. Again wounded in April 1918.
