IN MEMORIAM.
FRASER, IAN CATTO : 2nd Lieutenant,
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders;
son of John T. Fraser,
schoolmaster; born
Petty East, Inverness-
shire, 8 December
1895 ; educated Gor-
don's College ; student
in Arts, 1913-14.
He joined the Terri-
torials in 1 9 1 2, and en-
listed in the Gordon's
College Company of
the 1 /4th Gordons on
the outbreak of war.
After six months'
training at Bedford he went to the Front as a
Corporal ; commissioned on the field for distin-
guished service, he was transferred to the 2nd
Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders,
July 1915, and fought with them in the heavy
fighting at Loos where he was killed, 25 Sep-
tember 1915. Of Fraser it could be truly said
that he lived his life in short measures, two
sessions at the University, 6 months of training,
7 months of active service, and he was only 19
when he fell ; already he had shown that he had
the rare gift of infectious enthusiasm, which in-
spired others to do and dare along with him,
alike in the playing field at King's and in the
battle-fields of Flanders.

4th Gordon Highlanders. He was mobilized on
4 August 1 9 14, immediately volunteering for
foreign service, and left Bedford with the
Battalion for France in February 191 5. Whilst
there he displayed such conspicuous bravery in
carrying dispatches across a shell-swept zone,
that he was complimented by the Major-General
commanding the third Division for his dis-
tinguished conduct in the field, was recom-
mended for the D.C.M., and singled out for
promotion. After a course of training at St.
Omer he was gazetted to the 2nd Argyll and
Sutherland Highlanders in August 1915, and was
serving with them when he was killed in action
while leading his men to the assault at the Battle

the 3rd Gordons. Proceeding to the French
Front in May, he joined the 2nd Battalion
and proved his efficiency as a bombing officer.
On 25 September, when the Battalion charged
from their trench before Vermelles, he gallantly
led the bombers as far as Hulluch on the third
German line, where he fell during the German
counter-attack in the afternoon.
He had exceptional ability as a student and
was very popular. Beneath an easy manner
" there was a sternness and enthusiasm only
evident to his best friends, perhaps, and when
he was confronted by a difficult and dangerous
task. It was that sternness and enthusiasm
