in right arm at Ypres, 31st July, 1917 ; awarded Military Medal and 1915 Star. Son of Duncan
and Mary Bain, Hotel Proprietors, Fochabers. Occupation, dental mechanic.
BAIN, William. No. 166075, Pte., Canadian Army; born at Bangor Road, Leith, Edinburgh,
Nov. 10th, 1883, brought up in Lossiemouth, Morayshire ; joined in Canada, 20th March,
1915 ; served in France. Son of John Bain, II, Allan Lane, Lossiemouth, Morayshire, and
Christina Calder, or Bain. Occupation, plumber.
BAIN, William David. No. 630797, Pte., 3rd Seaforth Highlanders and Labour Corps ; born
at Banff, 29th Oct., 1892, residing in Elgin for 20 years ; joined at Perth, Nov., 1914 ; enlisted
in A.P.C., Nov., 1914 ; discharged unfit in May, 1916 ; recalled in June, 1917, 3rd Seaforth
Highlanders ; served in France. Son of James and Jessie Bain, Park View, Elgin. Occupa-
tion, law clerk.

BAIRD, Rev. David. Born at Tranent, East Lothian, 25th April, 1875, for 12 years minister of
the United Free Church of Scotland, Burghead ; joined in London, 9th March, 1917 ; served
in France with the Y.M.C.A. in the forward area of the 1st Army. Occupation, minister.
BAIRD, H. B. Douglas. Colonel, 12th Cavalry, Indian Army ; born in London, April 4th, 1877 ;
joined in India, 1897 ; served in Tirah Expedition 1897-8 (medal with 2 clasps), and European
War from 1914 in France ; awarded C.M.G., D.S.O., was Brigade Major to Inspector-General
of Cavalry, India, 1910-11 ; A.D.C. to Commander-in-Chief, Aldershot, 1912-14 ; G.S.O.
in 1914-15-1916 ; 5 times mentioned in Despatches, European War, was Brigadier-General
at taking of Messines Ridge, for which special mention, Croix de Guerre, and official French
thanks. Son of Colonel A. W. Baird, C.S.I., R.E. (deceased), and M. E. Davidson, or Baird„
Palmer's Cross, Elgin.
BAIRD, Percy Thomas Charles. Major, 79th Cameron Highlanders ; born at Bombay, India,
Nov. 28th, 1872 ; joined at Malta, March, 1894 ; served at Malta, Gibraltar, Crete, South
Africa, China, India ; killed in action at Vvonnezelle, Flanders, Feb. 15th, 1915. Son of
Colonel A. W. Baird, C.S.I., R.E. (deceased), Palmer's Cross, Elgin, and M. E. Davidson, or
Baird, Palmer's Cross, Elgin.
BAKIE, Alexander. No. 6251, Deck-hand, " Gowan Craig," I.N.S., R.N.R.T. ; born at Lossie-
mouth, 1st Oct., 1877 ; joined at Aberdeen, 19th April, 1915 ; served at Kirkwall ; contracted
illness during service and died 28th April, 1917. Son of John Bakie, Clifton Road, Lossie-
mouth, and Annie Flett, or Bakie (deceased). Occupation, fisherman.

June, 1896 ; joined at Archiestown,' 4th August, 1914 ; served in France ; twice wounded,
once in left ankle and once in chest. Son of Edward and Helen Balfour, Ivy Cottage, Archies-
town. Occupation, farm servant.

and Belgium ; killed in vicinity of Bapaume, 22nd March, 1918. Son of William and
Barbara Balfour, Kinneddar Street, Lossiemouth. Occupation, golf professional.
