Rise of Literacy
DescriptionA selection of printed books from 1460 to 1900 showing the development of literacy in Britain, with a focus on Scotland. Together they cover religious and secular education, including children's catechisms, hieroglyphic bibles, dictionaries, grammars, spellers and hornbooks. Also pamphlets from campaigns for founding schools and public libraries in Scotland, and embossed books for blind readers.
