1847, in his seventieth year and fortieth of his ministry. On his
monument he is commended thus : —
" He walked with God like Enoch : preached with the fervor of
Apollos : and, combining undaunted firmness with great gentleness
and benevolence, presented, through grace, a bright example of
Christian excellence and pastoral fidelity."
The Eev. Edward Irving, whose remains rest in the Cathedral
crypt* is with his sister, Mrs. Dickson, commemorated by an elegant
monument of Aberdeen granite, inscribed thus : —
" Sacred to the memory of the Eev. Edward Irving, A.M., who
was born at Annan, Dumfriesshire, on the 4th August, 1792 ; and
died at Glasgow, on the 8th December, 1834, aged forty-two years.
His remains are interred in the crypt of the adjoining Cathedral.
" Janet Irving, sister of the late Eev. Edward Irving, and wife
of Eobert Dickson, Esquire, late of Annan, Dumfriesshire, who
died at Glasgow, on the 29th August, 1849, aged fifty-five
years."
An elegant monument celebrates Eobert Muter, D.D. Born at
Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, on the 13th August, 1771, he studied at
the Divinity Hall of the Associate Synod, and obtaining license
was invited in 1800 to undertake the pastorate of the Associate
Church, Duke Street, Glasgow. There he ministered till his death,
which took place on the 5th May, 1842, in the seventy-first year
of his age, and forty-second of his ministry.
The Eev. William Brash, United Presbyterian minister, is com-
memorated by a monument of Elizabethan architecture. Born at
Edinburgh, on the 1st March, 1794, he was educated at the High
School and University of that city. After some preparatory
studies at the Theological Hall of the Associate Synod, he was
licensed to preach in March, 1815. In December of the same year
he was ordained collegiate minister of East Campbell Street con-
gregation, where he continued to minister till his death, which
took place on the 24th November, 1851.
