St. Eollox. As principal owner of these works INEr. Tennant
exercised a powerful influence, which he employed in promoting
the best interests of the community. He accelerated the construc-
tion of railways in the west of Scotland. He died on the 1st Octo-
ber, 1838, aged seventy-one.
A massive sarcophagus of Peterhead granite celebrates James
Ewing, LL.D. Second son of Walter Ewiug, West India merchant,
he was born at Glasgow, on the 5th December, 1775. Educated at
the High School, he entered on business at an early age ; he was
elected Dean of Guild, in 1815. In 1817 he published his
" History of the Merchant's House." He exerted himself in pro-
curing the abolition of the Burgess oath, which, after some oppo-
sition, he accomplished. In 1827 he took an active part in pro-
moting the erection of the Royal Exchange ; in the following year
he initiated the movement for the construction of the Necropolis.
He was, in 1831, elected Lord Provost, and in the following year
was chosen one of the city's representatives in the Reformed Par-
liament. Soon after, he received the degree of LL.D. from the
University. In 1836 he purchased the estate of Levenside, after-
wards Strathleven, and retiring from public affairs devoted him-
self to rural pleasures and works of benevolence. He died on the
20th November, 1853 ; he bequeathed £70,000 to charitable pur-
poses.
An elegant monumental sarcophagus commemorates the Rev.
Thomas Brown, D.D., minister of Free St. John's Church. This
eminent clergyman was born in the parish of Closeburn, Dum-
friesshire, on the 9th August, 1776. Educated at WallacehaU, and
afterwards at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, he was
licensed to preach in 1804, In 1807 he was ordained minister of
Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire ; he there ministered till 1826, when
he accepted a call to St John's Church, Glasgow. For some years
preceding the Disruption in 1843 he actively upheld the views of
the dominant party, and on the event of the Disruption he adhered
to the Free Church. He ministered in Free St. John's Church till
within a few weeks of his decease ; he died on the 23rd January,
