The House of Darnley Lennox furnished many valiant captains
to the military service of France ; their courage secured them pre-
ferment and fame. The Scots guard at the fatal field of Verneuil,
fought on 16th August, 1424, was chiefly composed of men,
actually natives of Scotland. Scotsmen continued to join the
Scots guard in France, and Captain Steuart, following the spirit
of his ancestors, volunteered his services to the French king.
According to the Scripture quotation on his tombstone, now in-
serted in the north wall of the nave, he died in Christian hope.
Captain Steuart was grandson of Allan Steuart, Jilio carnali of
John, first Earl of Lennox. He built the mansion-house of Car-
donald (lately taken down), in which there was a stone tablet, con-
taining his armorial bearings with his initials and motto : —
"I s
TOVIOVES
AVANT, 1562."
Tn 1569 Margaret Steuart, only child of the preceding,
married Sir John Stewart of Mynto, Provost of Glasgow,
Walter Stewart, the eldest son of that marriage, was appointed
Commendator of Blantyre in 1580, and created Lord Blantyre in
1606. The present Lord Blantyre is his lineal descendant.
