appointed a bailie of Paisley in 1540.
In the interior of the north aisle of the nave a stone, inscribed
in Eoman letters, contains the Hamilton arms for an ecclesiastic,
with the initials I. H. and the motto —
" MISERICORDIA ET PAX."
It commemorates Abbot John Hamilton, one of the three natural
sons of James Hamilton, first Earl of Arran. Appointed in 1625,
through the favour of his father, he exercised great influence over
his brother James, second Earl of Arran, Governor of Scotland
during the minority of Queen Mary. He was appointed Bishop of

Andrews in 1549. A firm adherent of Queen Mary, he was con-

1st April, 1570.

eldest son of Alexander, succeeded to the lands of Spango, which
he disposed in 1541 to his two natural sons, James and Eobert
Crawfurd. Eobert resigned his half to his brother James. The
inscription completes Eobert's history, by showing that he was both
captain and chamberlain to the monastery. The mortuary
biographer further gives his opinion that Eobert Crawfurd was a
very independent gentleman, because he never received honours from
