EDINBUKGH AND LEITH CEMETERY, ROSE BANK.
Rosebank Cemetery is situated on the east of the Water of
Leith, in the vicinity of Bonnington. Among the more noted
persons commemorated within its enclosure are the following : —
William Child, of Glencorse, died 10th August, 1847; George
Cunnynghame, of Cronan, died 9th January, 1847; MatthewBuchan,
M.D., died 4th Fehruary, 1848 ; Lieutenant- Colonel Philip Warren
Walker, died 5th November, 1850 ; Alexander Spence, banker,
Leith, died 4th May, 1852 ; Robert Cook, shipowner, Leith, died
11th November, 1856 ; David Young, teacher, Edinburgh, died 23rd
October, 1849 ; William Finlayson, M.D., died 26th AprU, 1852 ;
John Davidson, teacher in the High School, Leith, died 23rd
November, 1858; Lieutenant Edward W. Pitt, R.M., died 18th
January, 1858 ; William Belfrage, died 22nd March, 1860 ; Captain
John Hall, died 30th January, 1861 ; Robert Tulloh Easton,
Surgeon, R.N., died 14th August, 1861 ; James Pope, died 8th
November, 1866; and John Mitchell, of Mayville, Knight of the
Order of Leopold, and Belgian Consul at Leith, died 24tli
April, 1865.
A monument commemorates Peter Macleod, of Polbeth, author
of several popular Scottish melodies. He was born on the 8th
May, 1797, and died on the 10th February, 1859.
A tombstone, of Aberdeen granite, is thus inscribed : —
" Sacred to tlie memory of Miss Ida Bonanomi, the faithful and
highly esteemed dresser of Queen Victoria, who departed this life
October 15th, 1854, in the thirty-seventh year of her age, beloved
and respected by aU who knew her. This stone has been erected
by Queen Victoria as a mark of her regard."
Miss Bonanomi died at Holy rood Palace while in attendance on
the Queen.
