A tombstone commemorates the Eev. David Johnston, D.D.,
minister of Nortli Leith. Second son of the Eev. John Johnston,
Minister of Arngask. Dr. Johnston was born on the 24th April,
1734. Licensed by the Presbytery of Selkirk in 1757, he was in
the following year ordained to the ministry at Langton, Berwick-
shire. He was translated to North Leith parish in 1765. He
died on the 5th July, 1824, in the ninety-first year of his age, and
sixty-seventh of his ministry.
A tombstone commemorates the Rev. Walter Foggo Ireland, who
succeeded Dr. Johnston in the ministerial charge of the parish.
Having studied at the High School and University of Edinburgh,
he was licensed in 1798, and in the following year was ordained
assistant and successor to Dr. Johnston. He died on the 18th
February, 1828, in the fifty-thii-d year of his age, and thirtieth of
his ministry.
A plain tombstone denotes the resting-place of the poet, Eobert
KicoU. This short-lived son of genius was born at Auchtergaven,
Perthshire, on the 7th January, 1814. For some time he kept a
circulating library at Dundee. In 1836 he became editor of the
Leeds Times. The labour of conducting a public journal under-
mined a constitution which was never robust. He died at Edin-
burgh, on the 7tli December, 1837, in his twenty-third year.
Several of Eobert Nicoll's songs have obtained a wide popularity.
Tombstones in the Old Churchyard commemorate Samuel
Lindsay, Teacher in the High School of Edinburgh, who died
18th January, 1854, and Captain John Thomson, E.N., who died
12th November, 1803.
The Neiv Clmrehyard of North Leith is of recent construction.
There is a tombstone in memory of William Gooch, brother of Sir
Thomas Gooch, Bart., of Benacre Hall, Suffolk. He died on the
15th October, 1833.
