The US Civil War Charles Remond Douglass

‘I will never desert I take a bullet first’
Charles Remond Douglass

Charles Remond Douglass (1844-1920) was the youngest son of Anna Murray Douglass (1813-1882) and Frederick Douglass. He served a distinguished military career as a combat soldier first in the 54th Massachusetts regiment and then in the 5th Regiment, Massachusetts Cavalry. Like his eldest brother, Lewis Henry, Charles Remond’s letters from the frontlines survive and provide us with a powerful eye-witness account of Black military combat heroism and the tragedies and atrocities of warfare (see his 1863 letter in this section).
