Another cause however may have contributed towards this comparatively
low susceptibility to re-vaccination in Berar (27.6 per cent.), which is, that most
of these operations were performed at ages from 12 to 15, whilst in the Prussian
army the majority of those operated upon were between 20 and 30 years of
age, so that in their case the protective influence of the primary operation had
more time to become weakened.

The experience in Berar is that re-vaccination is only successful in those
cases where primary vaccination has been imperfectly performed, so that a high
percentage of failures in re-vaccination may be taken to indicate the efficiency
of the primary vaccination.

Statement No. I. Work of special
vaccination establishment.

6. Statement No. I gives full particulars of the year's work performed
by the special establishment, and the following
table shows the progress of the work by districts
for the past three years:—

There was a decrease in primary operations in the following districts com-
pared with the previous year : Amraoti (1,892), Ellichpur (496), Akola
(1,919), Buldana (1,511), and an increase in Wun (321) and Basim (856).

The decrease in the Amraoti district is owing to a general falling-off in
the amount of work done in almost every circle, due in part to their having
been 1,710 fewer births and 1,310 more deaths of children under one year of
age, or 3,020 fewer children available for vaccination than in the previous year,
and also to no work having been done on 171 days owing to sickness of vacci-
nators, against 31 days last year.

In all districts there was a falling-off in the available number of children
for vaccination as shown in table No. 9, and the number of days lost through
illness in each district as compared with the previous year is shown here-
under :—
