In all, there were 4,285 deaths which compares satisfactorily
with the quinquennial mean (Calendar Years) of 4,940. The
incidence was heaviest in the East Khandesh, Nasik, Ahmednagar,
Sholapur, Belgaum and Surat Districts.
14. Vaccination campaigns.—With the object of reducing the
number of unprotected school children to a minimum the usual
monsoon campaign was conducted by Inspectors of Vaccination in
Municipal Towns and Taluka Head Quarters.
Vaccinations in police lines and out-posts in being carried out
regularly. Special visits are paid by the vaccinators every month for
this purpose.
The vaccinators in charge of big fair centres were directed to
push on primary and re-vaccinations well in advance of the various
melas with the result that all centres escaped infection.
An attempt was made through the agency of influential local
councillors and other public men to induce the Momin community at
Malegaon to get their children vaccinated but without much success.
These people are deaf to all persuasion in spite of the recurrent
epidemics of considerable severity which sweep the town constituting
a menace to the rest of the District. The application of the Vacci-
nation Act to Malegaon requires consideration.
15. Lymph.—The lymph prepared at Vaccine Institute was the
only one used throughout the Presidency.
