Glycerinated chloroform lymph supplied by the Punjab Vaccine Depôt
was used in 50,889 primary operations and 9,932 re-vaccinations with a per-
centage of success in the former of 95.58 and of 78.85 in the latter. This
kind of lymph has given better results than those obtained in either of the two
previous years. The percentages in both cases have been worked out on the
total number of operations performed including the cases in which the results
were not known, and though the figures show about the same results in both
cases there is no question that the use of glycerinated lymph in place of
animal lymph has many advantages. The lymph received from the Vaccine
Depôt permitted of animal and human lymph being much more sparingly
used. There can be no doubt that the less we have to bother the people for
the supply of buffalo calves or children as vaccinifers, the more popular will
vaccination become among them. The efforts made during the last vaccina-
tion season to reduce the use of animal and human lymph to a minimum was
much appreciated and greatly lessened the friction that was constantly arising
owing to the difficulty in obtaining vaccinifers.

The use of human lymph has practically ceased in the settled districts
of the Province. But not so in the Shirani Country and the Agencies of Wano,
Dir, Swat and Chitral, where apparently little difficulty is experienced in
obtaining human vaccinifers. When practicable, efforts will be made to resort
more freely to the use of animal or glycerinated lymph.

Efforts made to train Mullahs
in the art of vaccination.

20. The efforts made by the Deputy Commissioner and Civil Surgeon,
Kohat, within the past two years to train certain
Mullahs of Hangu in the methods of vaccination has
unfortunately proved a failure. The Deputy Commissioner, Kohat, makes the
following report on the subject :—

" The practice of inoculation is presumbly still rife in Miranzai and in
the Orakzai country though no reports have been received on the subject.

Of the three Mullahs of Hangu who had learnt how to vaccinate, one
left Hangu long ago and the rest do not show any inclination to act as
vaccinators though every endeavour was made by the Assistant Commissioner,
Hangu, to induce them to do so. The matter has therefore had to be dropped
for the present."

Vaccination inspection by Ad-

during the year 1907-08, inspected 345 children in the
Municipal towns of Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and
Buffa and in the notified area of Tank. Of these 223
were well protected, 64 fairly well protected, 39 indifferently protected, and
19 unprotected.
