The districts showing the largest increase are Gorakhpur with 9,261, Aligarh
with 8,492, Hardoi with 7,957, Saháranpur with 7,721, Azamgarh with 6,657,
Meerut with 6,327, Moradabad with 5,815, Sítapur with 5,528, Hamírpur with
5,460, and Agra with 5,450.
Among the districts showing decrease, Basti (2,626), Garhwál (1,661) and.
Mirzapur (1,467), are conspicuous. The decrease in Basti is explained by the
District Superintendent of Vaccination to be due (1) to the dismissal of a perma-
nent vaccinator in December and to the post having remained vacant for the rest
of the season, and (2) to want of zeal on the part of some vaccinators who have been
suitably punished. In Garhwál decrease in successful primary operations was
much more counterbalanced by the large increase in the number of successful

They reveal the shift from variolation, improved vaccination techniques, logistics of lymph supply, funding and staffing. They explore how the local population viewed and resisted western vaccination. |
