Requested to send a Veterinary Assistant

One Veterinary Assistant was appoint-
ed and he succeeded in checking the
disease. In November, a very
bad type of rinderpest broke
out in certain parts of the district,
and another Veterinary Assistant
was deputed for work during the
outbreak.

One Veterinary Assistant was sent.
He had worked for a month only,
when his services were dispensed
with, though they were still requir-
ed. The reason given was that
a private Veterinary Assistant was
in practice. I visited Bhagalpur
in October 1897, and found that a
native shop-keeper had assumed the
title of Veterinary Surgeon, and
had taken a Veterinary Assistant
into his pay. This arrangement
did not last long, because the
Veterinary Assistant soon left ; but
I understand the confederacy treat-
ed one horse during its existence.
Twenty copies of the rules for guid-
ance in epidemics of rinderpest
were supplied. Bhagalpur being
a great cattle-country should have
at least two Veterinary Assistants,
especially as it is shown in the
Gazette that disease prevailed for
41 weeks out of 52.

One Veterinary Assistant was directed
to go to Araria, but he said that he
fell ill on his way and came back. An-
other could not be sent, as none was
available. Ten copies of the Bengali
translation of Verterinary Colonel
Hallen's Manual of Cattle Disease
were supplied to the Subdivisional
Officer of Araria for distribution.

One Veterinary Assistant has been sent
who is still working there. When I
visited Cuttack in January 1898 I
heard of a serious outbreak or disease,
which had died out before my
arrival.

Later on, expressed willingness to
appoint a Veterinary Assistant, but could
not for want of funds.

15 copies of the rules were supplied,
drawing special attention to the
chapter on rinderpest. The Deputy
Commissioner ordered the Superin-
tendent of Police to enforce the
villagers to strictly observe, the
rules.

Wished to appoint a Veterinary Assistant,
but could not, owing to no funds being
available.

The number of cattle attacked with
foot-and-mouth disease appears to be
greater, because the system of
reporting is better managed than else
where.

visited R ghunathnore and Shewhe-

about 500 head of cattle were carried
off. The Deputy Commissioner's
figures are evidently open to doubt.
