                                    (vi) Investigation.

20.    During the year under report, 216 specimens from suspicious
cases of Surra, Tuberculosis, Filaria, Fowl Typhoid, Epizootic
Lymphangitis, Piroplasmosis, Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia, Cocci-
diosis, Mange, Eczema and Parasitic Gastritis etc. were submitted
by the subordinate staff to the Superintendent, Civil Veterinary
Department, Sind and Rajputana, for examination and confirmation.
Of these 112 were confirmed. In addition 33 brains from cases of
Rabies were submitted to the Haffkine Institute, Bombay, of which
26 were confirmed.

                (vii) Veterinary Hospitals and Dispensaries.

21.    Table IV.—There were 18 Veterinary Dispensaries working,
the same number as last year. The total number of patients treated
at the dispensaries was 26,057 against 26,185 in the previous year.
Medicines and advice were given to the owners of 2,855 animals
which were not brought to the dispensaries for treatment as against
2,859 animals in the previous year. The number of castrations
performed at dispensaries was 1,818 as compared with 1,928 in the
previous year.

                        III.—BREEDING OPERATIONS.

22.    Tables VI and VII.—There were 4 District Local Board
stallions at the beginning of the year. One stallion was purchased
and one was destroyed owing to old age. There were thus
4 stallions at the close of the year. The stallions covered
190 mares during the year as compared with 175 mares covered in
the previous year. The cost of maintenance of the stallions was
Rs. 3,111 out of which Government contributed Rs. 951.

                                (ii) Fairs and Shows.

23.    Horse and Pony Shows.—The only Horse and Pony Show
held in Sind was at Jacobabad. 228 animals competed and prizes
amounting to Rs. 885 were awarded, in addition to a silver medal.
Last year the Show was not held on account of financial stringency.

                IV.—SUBORDINATE ESTABLISHMENT.

24.    There were 21 Veterinary Assistant Surgeons and two
Veterinary Inspectors, the same number as last year. Of the
21 Veterinary Assistant Surgeons, 18 were in charge of dispensaries
and three were on reserve duty. The question of opening more
dispensaries and appointing more staff has been deferred owing to
financial stringency.

25.    The Veterinary Inspector, Upper Sind Circle, was on tour
for 62 days and travelled 1,744 miles by rail and 96 miles by road.
The Veterinary Inspector, Lower Sind Circle, was 128 days on tour
and travelled 2,508 miles by rail and 367 miles by road. They
attended outbreaks of contagious diseases and supervised the work
of the Veterinary Assistant Surgeons whenever possible. The
