| Description | This is a drawing of a cruciform monument, Applecross, Ross-shire. It shows a large stone slab carved with a Celtic cross. The only information provided on the sheet is the location, 'at Applecross', and various measurements. The artist's name and the date have not been included. The village of Applecross lies on a peninsula between Loch Torridon and Loch Kishorn, in Ross-shire. Until the 1970s, the only overland route into Applecross was across the 'Bealach na Ba' or 'The Pass of the Cattle'. Originally, an old drove road, it rises from sea level to just over 2,000 feet in around 5 miles and is one of the highest roads in Scotland. Despite its isolation from the rest of the country for so many centuries, Applecross was home to one of the earliest Christian settlements in Scotland; in the seventh century an Irish monk by the name of Maelrubha founded a monastery here. Although little remains of the early settlement, a few ancient relics still lie near the local church, including the Celtic cross-slab in the churchyard. |
