| Description | This drawing shows the south-east view of the abbey and is dated September 1815. The artist has also included a note underneath the sketch: 'In the little aisle or chapel adjoining the East end, shown in the view, the Earl of Ross, the Founder, is said to have been interred, and in the Enclosure to the west of it is Abbot McFayd's monument'. Known as the 'Lamp of the North', Fearn Abbey is the most northerly medieval monastery in Scotland and is one of the oldest pre-Reformation churches still used for worship today. Founded in the early-thirteenth century by Ferquhard, Earl of Ross, the abbey was a Premonstratensian house dedicated to St Augustine. The monks remained there until the Reformation (1560), at which point the abbey became the local parish church. |
