| Description | This plan of St John the Baptist Collegiate Church, Corstorphine, Edinburgh, dates from 1813. It is by Alexander Morton, who drew many plans of Scottish church buildings during the early 1800s. The numbers included on the plan correspond with the numbered list on the left side of the drawing, and indicate the rooms and main areas of the building. Unlike Morton's other church plans, the exact dimensions of each room and area are not included on this drawing. There are records of church buildings having existed on this site from at least as early as 1128. However, the Collegiate Church of St John the Baptist is especially associated with the Forrester family, who lived in the city during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Sir Adam Forrester, a provost of Edinburgh, built a chapel dedicated to St John the Baptist in the late-fourteenth century. His son, Sir John Forrester, raised the church to collegiate status in 1429. The church is now the parish church of Corstorphine. |
