| Description | This drawing, made in 1781, shows Craigmillar Castle, the ruins of which are located in the south-east part of Edinburgh. By the time of this drawing, the castle was already becoming a ruin, as highlighted by the missing roof. The artist is unknown. King David I of Scotland granted the lands and houses at Craigmillar to Dunfermline Abbey during the twelfth century, although there is no record of a castle then existing. Often used by Scots royalty, it is most likely that the Preston family started the building of Craigmillar Castle in 1374, after John de Capella awarded them the Barony for the region. The castle boasts a rich history, and is particularly associated with Mary, Queen of Scots, and her husband, the ill-fated Lord Darnley. A nearby village was home to Mary's French servants. This still has the name of 'Little France'. |
