| Description | Armour on a tombstone at Ardchattan Priory, Argyllshire, 'by Miss Gilbert'. Alex the 6th probably refers to Alexander Campbell, the 6th Laird of Lochinell or Lochnell. This is one of three drawings completed by Miss Gilbert of the area and one ten views of Ardchattan. Ardchattan, still a substantial ruin, houses an impressive collection of craved stones. The earliest of these dates from the 900s and depicts a Celtic cross. Someone later cut it up to serve as a grave cover. Most of the rest of the stones are grave markers from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. After the Reformation, the priory became a parish church with further secular grave stones installed. |
