| Description | This is the second drawing by Miss Gilbert, with a note down one side of the sheet. This tells of the remodelling of the Priory for secular use in both in 1620 and in 1713. Duncan MacDougall founded Ardchattan in 1230 as a house of the Valliscaulian Order. He was also responsible for establishing the stronghold and power centre at Dunstaffinage Castle. Ardchattan was only one of three Valliscaulian monasteries in Scotland, the other two being Pluscarden and Beauly. Pluscarden was the only establishment to enjoy royal patronage, the other two being associated with lay-lords. After the Reformation, the buildings became the property of the Lords of Lochniell or Lochnell. |
