| Description | This rough sketch shows the exterior of Dunfermline Abbey viewed from the side. Another drawing in the Hutton Collection shows the abbey from the same angle in much more detail. It is possible they are both by the same artist and that this example was merely a preliminary sketch. There is no date or artist's name. Founded around 1070 by Queen Margaret as a house for Benedictine monks, and elevated to the status of an abbey by her son David I in the early-twelfth century, Dunfermline Abbey soon became an important ecclesiastical centre and burial place for Scottish monarchs. Queen Margaret and her husband, King Malcolm III, were both buried in the abbey, as was their son, King David I, and perhaps most famously, the abbey was the final resting place for Robert the Bruce. |
