| Description | This light pencil sketch shows the north-east view of Beauly Priory. It dates from 25th August 1815 and includes a note of the location underneath the drawing. Interestingly, the artist has used the French spelling of Beauly, 'Beau Lieu'. Much of the surrounding area has also been sketched, including fields, trees, and a number of people who appear to be watching sailing vessels on Beauly River. The Hutton Collection also includes drawings of the south view and south-west view. It has been suggested that the name Beauly originates from the French 'beau lieu', meaning 'beautiful place'. During a visit to the priory in 1564, Mary, Queen of Scots is purported to have admired the area and described it as the 'beau lieu'. However, the name could date from an even earlier time. When Valliscaulian monks arrived in the 1230s, they liked what they saw so much that they described it as 'Prioratus de Bello Loco' or 'Priory of the Lovely Spot'! |
