| Description | Interior view of Beauly Priory, Ross-shire [Subtitle:]. The title of this drawing reads, 'The Priory Church of Beaulieu in Rosshire - drawn from the East end looking West. Aug 1815'. It shows the interior of the ruined priory at Beauly, with a solitary figure seated on a central stone slab. The artist has included notes beneath the drawing detailing some of the deterioration. Also contained in the Hutton Collection are exterior views of the south, south-west and north-east. John Bisset founded Beauly Priory in 1230 as a house for the Valliscaulian Order. It was one of three houses established in Scotland by the order at this time; the others were located at Pluscarden and Ardchattan. Beauly Priory remained a Valliscaulian house until the early-sixteenth century, at which time it changed its allegiance to the Cistercian Order. Whilst parts of the complex lie in ruins or have disappeared over the years, the MacKenzies rebuilt the north transept in 1901 to serve as a mausoleum for the family. |
