| Description | There are two names contained inside the mounting frame of this engraving – ‘J.B., Esq, del.’, i.e. drew it, and ‘R. Scott, sculpt.’, i.e. engraved it. There is no date. This drawing illustrates the view to the south-west. The island of Iona, a long, relatively flat lying outcrop, is dominated by the now rebuilt, Iona Abbey. One of the few intact pieces of masonry seems to have been the bell tower. From the eight other images found in the Hutton Collection this feature always seems to have been the focal point of the island's skyline. There are at least three other monastic buildings still standing today which are associated with pre-Reformation religion on the island. |
