| Description | This is a page of a letter from M Green to Mr Urban incorporating a sketch of Iona Abbey. The sketch says it is by 'Lilliman, Oct. 1761'. The letter discusses the illustrations in certain volumes of books and the lack of a schoolmaster on Iona. The whole is an extract from the 'Gentleman's Magazine' published in July 1793 (Volume 1 xiii). This sketch was to be an illustration in one of these volumes. This illustration is one of nine views of Iona contained in the Hutton Collection. This view of Iona is a little more unusual as it is contained on an extracted letter. The other views are mainly copies of whole paintings and drawings. The views cover a wide date range - about 75 years - and illustrate many of the island's religious features. |
